Inviting everyone to visit SFAD JCB Gallery’s upcoming show “Budhi”, the expression of inner mind and conscience.

February 1-28, 2024 at SFAD JCB Gallery, PWU-Manila Campus.

SFAD JCB Gallery presents Budhi, a solo exhibition by PWU BFA Painting alumnus Anthony Nañola opening on February 1, 4 pm. The exhibition will run from February 1-28. Exhibition walkthroughs are scheduled for February 3, 10 am and 2 pm, aligned with the CCP PASINAYA’s PASEO MUSEO.

Budhi is an expression of the inner mind and conscience. Anthony Nañola reflects on the concept of budhi through colorful strings tying together Filipino lives while suffocating potential growth. Violence, which has endlessly gripped the country, finds its way through his canvas confronting the viewers. Nañola explores Philippine culture as situated within the fissures of its complexity. There is a constant presence of tension–in inescapable deep religiosity and joyful celebrations intersecting with social injustice and economic struggle.

Anthony Nañola grew up in Lucban, Quezon where the vibrant Pahiyas Festival livens up the town every May 15th. The celebration of the Feast of San Isidro, the patron saint of farmers is common in many agricultural centers of the Philippines. The town has a dynamic art scene, where both self-taught traditional artists and experimental contemporary artists continue to practice. Nañola’s early art education started among the artists of Lucban until he pursued his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting at the Philippine Women’s University, graduating in 1999. Since then, Nañola exhibited in local and international galleries, pushing the boundaries of commercial art making and critical art practice.
