: Ai-She Footwear

18 years ago, Corazon Coligado was a nurse at a provincial hospital in Laguna with a dream to one day start a business. When she could not go abroad to pursue work, she took it as a chance to establish Ai-She Footwear, named after her daughters, Aira and Shelly.

Ai-She Footwear started as a microenterprise with only 2 workers under a nipa hut in a farm. Now, it is a manufacturing company supporting over 60 families, including the local PWDs in their community, the barong makers of Lumban, the weavers of Ilocos and Basilan, and the beadworkers of the Bagobo Tribe.

Her business has won many awards: the Outstanding One Town, One Product Small and Medium Enterprise; the Most Innovative Product; Best Small Enterprise Award, to name a few.

Today, Ai-She Footwear actively provides opportunities for livelihood in her community through collaborations with local artisans to create sustainable products, rooted in Filipino culture.

: Angie's Yakan Cloth

In 1983, Angie Pichay Ilul started her business, equipped with only her weaving skills from home province Ilocos Sur, the Yakan weaving techniques she learned from her mother-in-law, and 200 pesos.

But because of a lack of funding, Angie had to stop and work abroad in Saudi Arabia. Through this, she saved enough money to revive the business, now officially called Angieโ€™s Yakan Handloom Weaving.

Today, Angieโ€™s Yakan Handloom Weaving offers a diverse range of products, from traditionally woven cloths to wall decor to fashion accessories. It remains dedicated to preserving and supporting the cultural heritage of the Yakan tribe, supporting cloes to 40 families in Zamboanga City.

: Abel Kan Burda Ta Ka Itnegan Handloom Weaving!

Kimberly Agaid-Gundran was raised by a family of weavers in the quiet town of Namarabar, Peรฑarrubia, Abra. Guided by their support, she joined the Department of Trade and Industryโ€™s training in entrepreneurship, product development, and marketing.

This empowered her to turn her familyโ€™s tradition into triumph with her brand, Abel Ken Burda Ta Ka Itnegan Handloom Woven Productsโ€”a business that specializes in apparel handwoven in the Itneg traditions, such as boleros, polo barongs, and more.

Through this business, Kimberly is able to preserve her heritage, the Itneg culture, and pass its weaving artistry to more generations.

There are . Meet Abella's House of Arts ๐Ÿชก

This Earth Day,๐ŸŒ we celebrate two Filipino artists who actively advocate for Mother Earth. In the 2023 Gateway Gallery exhibit, Mangha-Likha: Defying Art Conventions, artists Marvel Obemio and Gilbert Angeles demonstrated this commitment.

๐ŸŒMarvel Obemio of Quezon City recycles materials to create his art, promoting environmental sustainability. He chooses discarded items, primarily soda can pull tabs and discarded plastics, to create his artworks. His work involves assembling these materials into textured, intriguing, and intricate pieces.

๐ŸŒGilbert Calderon Angeles of Bulacan is a prominent Filipino "eco-artist" known for his pioneering work in post-consumer waste art. He uses shredded plastic laminates (such as shampoo sachets,
and candy wrappers) as a textural base, which he then layers with "eco-paints" made from leftover paint residues or scraps. For canvases, he prioritizes reclaimed materials like old plywood or discarded textiles.

Spaces of Heroism

The Capas National Shrine, located in Barangay Arangguren, Capas, Tarlac, serves as a dramatic symbol and memorial for the suffering and heroism of Filipino and American soldiers during World War II. Recognizing the site's importance as the terminal point of the Bataan Death March and the concentration camp of the Allied soldiers, President Corazon Aquino declared it a National Shrine on December 7, 1991. The shrine's obelisk, which signifies Peace, was inaugurated on April 9, 2003. The central towering monument is flanked by three segmented black marble walls engraved with the names of the more than 30,000 fallen Allied soldiers who were incarcerated in the camp

The shrine covers 55 hectares, with 35 hectares planted with trees to symbolize the 30,000 fallen soldiers. It also features 3 smaller memorials dedicated to the soldiers of the US, the Philippines, and the Czech Republic, a museum built by an American group, and a garden accessible by a hanging bridge. The Shrine is a popular site used for April 9 celebrations. and is projected to be a part of the New Clark City.
