Bring them out of the “baul”!🗃️🍱 ⚓️
The year 2026 marks the 300th year of a momentous celebration for the Island of Ticao. Long before Spanish colonization, Ticao already had established settlements, its own system of governance, and a distinct way of life. The earliest known settlement, then called Tigao, was located outside of what is now the town of San Fernando. Because of constant Moro raid then, the settlement moved to San Jacinto.
The months of May, June, July, and August 2026 are especially significant in our history. These months commemorate key events that shaped Ticao’s identity, notably:
• The sinking of the galleon Santo Cristo de Burgos along the eastern seaboard of Ticao on July 23, 1726
• The enthronement of Santo Cristo de Burgos at Altar Mayor in La Iglesia de Tigao
• The establishment of the townhood of San Jacinto in the current San Jacinto which became the premier town in Ticao
shortly thereafter
As part of the tricentennial celebration, we are organizing a photo exhibit that will showcase the way of life in Ticao from the old days to the present. Costumes, family photos, crests, old letters, birth certificates, ids, etc.
We warmly invite the community to contribute photographs kept in family baúls or personal collections. Photos may be submitted to our Museo de Ticao Office office in San Jacinto Pasalubong Center Port of San Jacinto in physical form or as scanned copies, accompanied by annotations or brief descriptions (such as names, dates, places, and stories connected to the image).
We also collect other memorabilia’s like old dresses, kitchen utensils and other home items like banga that we can use to recreate the old San Jacinto home - bedroom and kitchen style (eg with bangerahan) before western designs were introduced.
Please be assured that submissions will be returned after documentation, if you do not wish for us to keep them in the Museo.
Through this exhibit, we hope to honor our shared history, preserve collective memory, and pass these stories on to future generations.
Please submit as soon as possible so these can be included in the design. Submission may close end of March 2026.
