Fearing she was a victim of infidelity, Procris followed her beloved Cephalus into the woods and hid behind a bush to spy on him, where he was resting during a hunting expedition. The young woman’s jealousy led her to her death when Cephalus, hearing her movements in the bushes, mistakes her for a wild animal and accidentally kills her with his spear.

Wtewael chose to depict that story from Ovid’s Metamorphosis and particularly the scene where Cephalus cradles the dying Procris in his arms, and attempts to remove the arrow with which he kills her.

Like many of his contemporaries, Joachim Wtewael used contrived poses, extended limbs, shading from light to dark, and acidic colors to achieve a visually interesting composition. Procris is posed to demonstrate the artist’s skill at rendering the human figure rather than to capture her agony or give the painting the feeling of an eyewitness account.
