Espazio Arts + History

Espazio Arts + History An space for people to connect and celebrate as they enjoy nourishing food. Then came the film cameras, vinyl records, radios and typewriters.

OUR STORY

Espazio Arts + History started as a ‘pandemic passion project’ of husband and wife couple Sambo and Kathleen Yaokasin. Sambo is a hobbyist collector of vintage items with an interest in history while Kathleen is a gifted artist with a passion for visual arts. They decided to bring together each of their own passions and create an Instagram-worthy space they can share with others. When S

ambo was still in government service, he saw the need to establish a local museum showcasing the rich history of Tacloban and set up a spacious art gallery displaying the many beautiful artworks of local artists. In 2020, the COVID-19 global pandemic forced everyone to stay home and many business establishments to shut down indefinitely. Sambo joined a local barter group on social media to show solidarity and foster a sense of community amid the fear and uncertainty. With no more money on hand, the barter allowed struggling individuals to trade their used/unused items for food and basic necessities. It was a welcome relief for cash-strapped individuals and families, especially those who lost their jobs and livelihoods due to the lockdown. Instead of waiting for government dole-outs, it encouraged them to be resourceful. For Sambo & Kathleen, bartering became a way to extend assistance to the community. At first, the swaps were things of moderate value like plantsa de uling and gilingang bato. Later, century-old large clay jars, old coins and bills, and some WW 2 items used by the US and Japanese soldiers slowly surfaced. When Sambo started getting more and more items, he realized that his dream
of putting up a local museum cm arts gallery may just become a reality. On September 09, 2021, Sambo and Kathleen opened Espazio Arts + History. Being a local café with a very unique concept, our mission is to provide an space for people to connect and celebrate as they enjoy nourishing food and drinks from a carefully selected menu - passionately prepared, presented and served by an excellent team, while committing to preserve history and promote arts in our local community. Espazio Arts + History operates as a Business As Mission (BAM) enterprise where a part of its profits goes to support the couple’s “Wheels of Hope” program – a program that provides free wheelchairs to indigent Person With Disabilities (PWDs) and the Leyte-Samar Center for Change Foundation, Inc. – a non-government organization (NGO) that is involved in rescuing children at risk and provides alternative family care and education to them in a safe environment. Sambo and Kathleen are proud of the space they have created that many visitors (residents/non-residents/tourists/excursionists) appreciate and enjoy - from the vintage items to the artworks and even the dining options. They are most grateful to the community for supporting their passion projects and social advocacies. Soli Deo gloria!

At Espazio, every dish is more than a meal—it’s a story of comfort, heritage, and heart.

Our Lechon Paksiw brings new life to a Filipino classic. Tender roasted pork slowly simmered in a rich, tangy-sweet sauce, it carries that familiar warmth that feels like home with every spoonful.

The Beef Bulalo is pure nourishment for the soul. Slow-cooked until the broth turns flavorful, with marrow-rich goodness and tender beef that reminds us to slow down, gather, and savor life’s simple joys.

For those who love bold, savory flavors, our Pork Sisig delivers that perfect sizzle of crunch, spice, and zest—an irresistible favorite meant for celebrating moments big or small.

And our Beef Kaldereta is a true Filipino comfort classic—hearty, rich, and slow-cooked in a tomato-based sauce with just the right depth and warmth, perfect for meals that feel like family gatherings around the table.

At Espazio, food is not just served—it’s shared, remembered, and felt.

At Espazio, one of our most treasured historical collections is the first eight editions of Leyte-Samar Free Philippines — recognized as the very first free newspaper published in the Philippines after the historic October 20, 1944 Liberation of Leyte during World War II.

These rare newspapers are more than fragile pages from the past. They are powerful witnesses to history — telling the story of hope, courage, resilience, and the rebirth of freedom after years of war and occupation.

Printed in the midst of liberation, every edition captures a defining moment in our nation’s journey toward freedom. Holding these newspapers feels like touching history itself.

Today, these priceless editions are proudly preserved and displayed at Espazio Arts + Food + History as part of our continuing mission to honor our heritage, keep history alive, and inspire future generations to remember the sacrifices that paved the way for the freedoms we enjoy today.

History lives here. 🇵🇭

Heritage is a living story. It’s in our language, our art, and the traditions we pass down. ✨

This National Heritage Month, we’re celebrating the vibrant threads that weave our identity together: from the food on our tables and the music in our ears to the very walls that surround us.

At Espazio, we believe that heritage isn’t just about looking back; it’s about keeping these stories alive for the generations to come. Every piece of art and every tradition is a bridge that connects our roots to our future.

Let’s honor our past and take pride in our story.

Happy National Heritage Month! 🇵🇭

🇵🇭 ON THIS DAY: May 10, 1897 🇵🇭

Today, we remember one of the most painful and defining moments in Philippine history — the ex*****on of Andres Bonifacio and his brother, Procopio.

In the quiet mountains of Maragondon, Cavite, the Supremo of the Katipunan met a tragic end — not at the hands of foreign colonizers, but by fellow Filipinos during a time of deep division within the revolution.

Andres Bonifacio, often called the “Father of the Philippine Revolution,” ignited the spirit of freedom among ordinary Filipinos and inspired a nation to rise against oppression. Alongside his brother Procopio, he gave everything for the dream of an independent Philippines.

Their story reminds us that nation-building has never been easy. It is marked not only by courage and heroism, but also by sacrifice, conflict, and difficult lessons about unity, leadership, and love of country.

As we honor their memory today, may we continue to value truth, freedom, and the shared history that shapes us as a people.

Lest we forget.
