Mirabuena and Portodo have resisted being reduced to artistic replication, mimicry, imitation or reflection. In Iloilo, their lives continue to intersect, even as proximity gives way to individuation – an intersection sans fusion. In this exhibition, art is presented as a shared origin that reveals into distinct trajectories where each artist develops a personal visual language while remaining subtly linked through a mentor-mentee bond.

Even Out :Another Mountain for Heavy Lids is a series where Lyndon Maglalang presents the mountain as a metaphor for the struggles and personal obstacles that he has been encountering throughout his life. The style for these works was something that he discovered accidentally, where incidental formations of paint started building up in his scraper after some time. This prompted a shift in perspective in where the image and the tool have reversed their respective roles. According to the artist, these works prompt him to reflect, assess, and confront your own mountain. He believes that the act of scraping is not merely physical but also a spiritual and gradual shaping of the self, where each removal brings you closer to the potentiality of transformation. This demonstrates the power of Hope and how it could simply transform obstacles into tools that help us find the transformative light that burns bright inside ourselves.

Robert Valencia’s Performative Man presents a pretentious figure seated on a child’s riding toy as he reads The 8 Laws of Power while holding a cup of matcha with the other hand. The image is filled with signifiers of aspiration and curated identity, yet the child’s toy undercuts the gravitas of these pursuits. Instead it shows an image of contemporary masculinity shaped by consumption of self-help, aesthetic trends, and the embarrassing desperation to appear “in control."

The trilogy Between Becoming and Unbecoming reflects on the fragility of systems once presumed enduring and permanent. Cracks, corrosion, and partial collapse break the sense of strength and permanence, exposing grandeur and stability as provisional states. These signs of decay recall ancient ruins like those in Egypt or Greece as well as the aging mansions of sugar barons in Iloilo and Negros, where strength and fragility exist side by side. In these paintings, time is not just about duration alone; it acts as a force that leaves marks of economic decline, political change, and environmental strain on the edifice itself.

Ikoy Ricio’s notion of Redemption is materialized through text cutouts of words from the book of Malachi that resemble ransom notes. Just like the thing it derives itself from, the artist's continuous series of works construct a language of urgency, as these types of notes have historically been associated with imminent danger where a life hangs in the balance. In this parallel, Ricio draws a critical equivalence between the desperation embedded in such notes and the spiritual condition that he seeks to address. Just as a ransom note signals a life in peril, his scriptural fragments also depict how we could earn redemption from the inevitable coming of divine justice by surrendering ourselves to Jesus Christ.

In Kamahal-mahalan, Kataas-taasan, Ace Eugenio Enriquez transforms the economic spectacle of suffering into a tableau of figures that lean against a gas pump as an object that they heavily rely on. The backdrop erupts in flames as aerial bombs bombard them with a catastrophic flood of hellfire. In this imagery, a mundane object such as a gas pump becomes a god that people rely on. It shows how anything can become a lever of control if the world depends on it to run. In this context it becomes a god, a bargaining chip, and perhaps a wakeup call to look for other alternatives that we can use. The title, invoking a satirical play of divine reverence, becomes bitterly ironic. What is deemed as “beloved” and “most high” appears instead as the very apparatus that perpetuates the suffering that its followers exist in.

In Intersection, figuration and abstraction converge in Mirabuena’s paintings. Drawn from familiar sculptural forms, his subjects reappear as reimagined presences. Suspended in soundless reverie are ancient Greek figures from myth and history, and Christian angels. These iconic bodies are set within trees, foliage, and flowering growthge, rendered through painterly gestures that range between impressionistic softness and the emotive strokes of lyrical abstraction. Each composition carries the stillness of a portrait, a centeredness that invites contemplation of an otherworldly sitter.
Rather than signaling an eclectic aesthetic, Mirabuena’s paintings suggest an inquiry into idealized form where beauty shifts from the corporeal toward the divine, and the body becomes a vessel for transcendence. His works in this exhibition finds no disagreement between the pagan and the Christian when viewed through the lens of shared human longing. A reverence for life, a pursuit of virtue, and an attunement to the sacred within the natural world are what Mirabuena reiterates. -Words by Martin Genodepa

In It is Finished, Siefred Guilaran uses the vocabulary of digital culture and decision-based systems to translate theological questions of salvation into the interface logic of choice. In essence, through his work of a crucifixion image coupled with the words Game Over,” “Do you want to continue?”, and “Yes / No,” Guilaran shows us that even after moments of metaphorical death, we can always keep choosing life, and we are given an infinite number of times to continue and choose being alive. Free Will, despite showing how we have so much autonomy in our lives, somehow still radiates a burden of responsibility to keep choosing the right path, as we are given an infinite number of times to do so as long as we are alive.

Jan Michael Tauro’s Sa Pagitan ng Pananalig at Pagdududa navigates the dark territory where faith and skepticism continuously struggle to extinguish each other. A figure wearing a Pinocchio mask peers from a boat, its gesture doubled by a hand emerging above its head in a posture suggestive of blessing or invocation. The figure clutches a devotional Santo Niño figure as they all sink before an indifferent sea. It simply shows how faith and disbelief are both blind phantoms that do not resolve to answer the vast sea of questions that dwell within the confines of our questioning minds. And in time both shall sink as we learn to swim with confidence in our own selves. -Words by Dave Lock

The lives of Jomel Mirabuena and Renwil Portodo first intersected at Fort San Pedro National High School in Iloilo City, where Portodo was Mirabuena’s student. This early mentor-mentee relationship extended into their artistic pursuits, with both consistently earning recognition in local and national competitions. Mirabuena’s most notable distinction came in 2016, when his painting was selected as a Juror’s Choice awardee at the Philippine Art Awards. Portodo, likewise, became a frequent prizewinner in local contests and later became a fellow in the 2023 Tuklas Art Training and Residency Program at Eskinita Art Farm.
Both artists share an academic foundation at Iloilo Science and Technology University, where they studied courses in Architecture. Yet the interconnections give way to divergence in their artistic intentions, processes, and contexts, marking the point at which their practices begin to clearly unfold. -words by Martin Genodepa
