*Hic sunt dracones* – here there are dragons – refers to the unknown, the mysterious, the dangerous, the unfamiliar, or that which is yet to come, extending across both time and space. It is a phrase associated with medieval cartography, yet evidence of its enduring relevance abounds. *Hic sunt dracones* also suggests a possible realm of parallel, alternative reality. The project evokes the symbolic gesture of marking territories that elude knowledge, control, and imagination. It looks beyond the margins of the map. Paradoxically, *hic*, meaning *here*, is always *there* – somewhere else. The exhibition explores the limits of knowledge, places that have been erased or cause discomfort, and territories of conflict, imagination, mystery, and silence. Its premise is less to describe the world than to identify its blank spaces – places where knowledge gives way to imagination and certainty becomes a search. The exhibition extends beyond the indoor exhibition space and into the garden.
***Hic sunt dracones*** – “here be dragons” – is one of the most evocative phrases associated with early cartography. It was inscribed on maps at the point where knowledge ran out, in places filled with conjecture, fear, and imagination rather than facts.
Hic sunt dracones – tu są smoki, odnosi się do tego co niepoznane, tajemnicze, niebezpieczne, obce albo przyszłe, rozciąga się zarówno w czasie jak i w przestrzeni. ...
