Cultural Guardians September edition comes to an end. And this is how we spend our last day together with Muzeum Historii Polski

Our group of Ukrainian museum professionals visited the Museum of the History of Poland in Warsaw, and we came back with a head full of ideas. Gabriela Dec , Deputy Director for Education and Communication, and Marta Tabakiernik, Deputy Head of the Education Department, guided us through it.

What inspired us most:
• The Museum Box created by Marta Tabakiernik and gifts for kids and adults that keep the museum part of their lives after the visit
• A children's learning space with child-height tables, a sink, and a storage full of workshop materials
• A library and an open book club for everyone
• A 572-seat concert hall, which hosted almost 700 guests at a vernissage
• The exhibition "Za czym kolejka ta stoi?", which tells the story of communist-era Poland through its music
• An interactive path where kids and adults follow a little explorer and learn history through tasks
• A quiet room for anyone who needs a break
A museum can be a place of learning, play, and rest, and we want our museums to be that too. We'll bring these ideas home, and we'll keep using them after our victory.

Thank you, Muzeum Historii Polski, for your openness and generosity.

🇩🇪 Three days of study visits in Germany. One public debate. One question: what can museums do against disinformation?

Day 1: we opened at the Neue Nationalgalerie.

Day 2: Potsdam. We met Europa Nostra Germany, the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation and the city’s culture team. Then Museum Barberini, where curators, registrars and security staff talked through how a collection is actually protected.

Day 3: Humboldt Forum, Altes Nationalgalerie, ICOM Germany, the German Historical Museum, and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, where the session ran in English and Ukrainian.

Day 4: Culture vs. Disinformation. In his keynote, Magnus Hjort of Sweden’s Psychological Defence Agency put museums, libraries and archives on the same to-do list as elections and media literacy. Then voices from Kyiv, Kharkiv, Warsaw, Berlin and Sweden took on one question: how do museums earn trust before the next lie arrives?

Today’s stop: Warsaw.

Thank you our partners for the support they given to make this study visit happen!:

Culture vs. Disinformation – A Cultural Guardians Debate
Disinformation doesn't only target elections and news feeds. It targets history, memory and identity, which are the very things museums exist to protect.
This week, Cultural Guardians brought museum leaders, policymakers and resilience experts to the Forum in Berlin to ask how culture can strengthen societies against hybrid threats.

How the morning unfolded:

🔹 Opening & welcome remarks
Prof. Dr. Hartmut Dorgerloh, Director General of the Humboldt Forum · Małgorzata Ławrowska - von Thadden- Chairwoman of OBMIN · Silke Krummel, Director of the Agentur für Internationale Museumskooperation (video message) · Gero Dimter, Vice-President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation · Ivan Verbytskyi, First Deputy Міністерство культури України (video message)

🔹 Keynote
Dr. Magnus Hjort, Director General of the Swedish Psychological Defence Agency, on societal resilience to malign information influence

🔹 Panel: "How to Build Trust? Museums in the Age of Hybrid Warfare"
Voices from Kyiv, Kharkiv, Warsaw, Berlin and Sweden worked through three questions: what happens when truth becomes a battlefield, why facts alone are not enough, and how to build trust before the next lie arrives.
With Kathrin Grotz (Institute for Museum Research) · Dr. Yurii Savchuk (Національний музей історії України у Другій світовій війні. Офіційна стор.) · Ольга Сошникова (Харківський історичний музей імені М. Ф. Сумцова) · Dr. Magnus Hjort
Moderated by Dr. Łukasz Galusek, Director of the Silesian Museum in Katowice

🔹 Open discussion & networking
The panel closed with one question to every speaker: if trust is something museums have to earn rather than simply claim, what is the one thing they should do today to deserve it?

Thank you to all our speakers, partners and everyone who joined us! The conversation continues.

🔦 Panelist Spotlight — Cultural Guardians
We’re grateful to Yuriy Savchuk, General Director of the Національний музей історії України у Другій світовій війні. Офіційна стор. National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War (Kyiv), for taking part in this year’s Cultural Guardians discussion.

On the Cultural Guardians initiative, organized by OBMIN:
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine has faced challenges Europe hasn’t seen in decades. In the face of today’s threats, it matters more than ever not to carry that experience alone — but to join forces, learn from one another, and search together for answers to difficult questions. For Ukrainians, these professional ties carry a deeply human dimension too: a sense of support and of not being alone. What makes the museum’s partnership with OBMIN especially valuable is its consistency. Cultural Guardians advances Ukraine’s European integration in the museum field and builds a genuinely strong transnational professional community, united by European values.

On why this discussion matters:
Museums today are the nerve centers of historical memory — central to how a society’s identity is formed. They need to strengthen a society’s immunity to propaganda and disinformation, reinforce a country’s democratic foundation, and function as part of national security. That’s why documenting the ongoing war and preserving its history for future generations sits at the core of the Museum of War’s work in Kyiv. Isolated solutions don’t work against today’s global challenges — this discussion is a chance to exchange experience, build shared approaches, and answer the questions museums across Europe are facing. As anti-democratic forces try to sow division, it creates a platform for genuine cooperation among European museum professionals.

Thank you,Yuriy, for your partnership and for documenting Ukraine’s present for its future.

Panelist Spotlight — Cultural Guardians

We're grateful to Olga Soshnikova, Director of the Kharkiv M.F. Sumtsov Historical Museum (Харківський історичний музей імені М. Ф. Сумцова ), for joining this year's Cultural Guardians discussion in Berlin.

Dr. Soshnikova holds a PhD in Philosophy (2012), is an Honored Culture Worker of Ukraine (2019), and was awarded the Order of Princess Olga, 3rd class, in 2025. She leads one of Ukraine's largest museums, with a 106-year history and its own scholarly traditions.

Her message to the OBMIN Foundation captured exactly why this partnership matters:

🏛️ OBMIN unites all 32 museums of the Kharkiv region that safeguard the state part of Ukraine's Museum Fund — including the Kharkiv Historical Museum itself.

🤝 For institutions working through a full-scale war, international cultural diplomacy isn't symbolic — it's a source of real partnership and support.

💾 Digitization has stopped being just a matter of convenience or modernization. It's become a matter of preservation: documenting artifacts, safeguarding information about them, and keeping research and access possible even when physical collections are at risk.

🌍 Building this bridge, year after year, around shared European values is itself a quiet form of resistance — choosing dialogue over weapons to resolve what divides us.

Thank you, Olga, for your partnership and for the work of preserving Ukraine's cultural heritage — a heritage that belongs to Europe as a whole — under extraordinarily difficult conditions.

Thank you for your credits! Херсонський обласний краєзнавчий музей !

Kherson Regional Museum and Odesa Historical Museum didn’t know each other well until they met at an OBMIN conference.

That connection turned into a working partnership: joint exhibitions, interactive workshops, and shared educational programmes between two institutions on opposite ends of the country.

As Kherson Regional Museum put it in their own recap this week: enemies can destroy buildings, but not the bridges built between people.

This is what the network is for — not just a platform for exchange, but the space where those bridges start.
