Karolina Bielawska works primarily across the painting genre. As part of her practice, she has developed a distinctive sculptural language, creating large-scale, site-specific installations. Her works materialise through a restrained, often monochromatic palette, punctuated by subtle accents of colour. Through the minimal language, she builds compositions that are considered both intuitive and elusive, combining fractal lines, traces of seemingly spontaneous gestures, and biomorphic forms suspended between abstraction and figuration.

Bielawska’s latest paintings depict figures reminiscent of birds, captured in motion or shown only in certain fragments. The body of a bird becomes a patch of color, or a contour on the surface of the canvas. This figurativeness remains extremely fragile — changing the orientation of the painting or the way it is cropped causes the recognizable silhouette and immediately starts to resemble once again an abstract gesture. The repetition of these avian fi gures imparts a restless, almost ornamental quality to the paintings.

The title Sparrow’s Heart refers to the sedentary nature of the species which results in a special relationship with its immediate surroundings. Sparrows operate within small, peaceful, and well recognized territories. Threatening situations force a rapid acceleration of their heart rate – a situation that their bodies cannot sustain for long. The juxtaposition of a sedentary nature and physiological tension becomes a springboard for refl ecting on the interdependence between body and place. It translates directly into how the exhibition is constructed. The works remain in close alliance with each other and the context of the space – moving between these environments is an integral part of the experience. Here, standing still, looking and fi nally moving creates a unique form of sensitivity to what is around us.

The tools of the avant-garde return in an unexpected context: as techniques used to support the sale of apartments on the real-estate market.

Jan Domicz traces the trajectory of ideas from artistic experiment to practical marketing instruction.
The space of Foksal Gallery will be gradually repainted according to a found script. Throughout the entire process, the gallery will remain open to the public.

The personal narratives and precise formal construction of the films by British video artist John Smith provide a counterpoint to the impersonal language of an online interior-design guide. Individual experiences of dwelling and the materiality of architecture are set against the anonymous logic of spatial optimization.

Jan Domicz (b. 1990) is a visual artist working with video, objects, and exhibition formats. He is a graduate of the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main and the University of Arts in Poznań. In his practice, he draws on the narrative potential of space and its socio-political implications. His works have been presented at institutions including the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and Frankfurt, Kunstverein SALTS in Basel, and Karlin Studios in Prague.

John Smith was born in 1952 in Walthamstow, London. He studied at North-East London Polytechnic and the Royal College of Art before becoming an active member of the London Filmmakers’ Co-op. Early in his practice, he drew on conceptual art and structural film while developing a parallel fascination with the immersive power of narrative and spoken language. His extensive body of work challenges the boundaries between documentary, fiction, representation, and abstraction.

June 12 - August 15, 2026
Wschód Warsaw

The exhibition 𝘚𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦 by Laurie Smith at Galeria Wschód presents artist’s latest paintings, which delve into the complexities of q***r presence and subjectivity in the contemporary metropolis. The project takes the form of a site-specific painting installation, where individual works function as fragments of a single nocturnal narrative, constructing a layered intimacy of fleeting encounters. Smith continues his research into the visual and social strategies of constructing q***r life within the social imagination. The works engage with the psychoanalytic concept of 𝘫𝘰𝘶𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 – a state of intensity in which pleasure and pain are inseparable, and the categories of trauma and celebration converge.

First presentation is titled 𝘍𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘨 by Tbilisi-born, Düsseldorf-based artist Andria Dolidze (Andria Dolidze).

The work consists of collected banners gathered from institutions and public spaces across Düsseldorf and other cities, mounted directly onto the gallery façade and terrace. The surfaces have been reworked with acrylic paint, predominantly metallic pigments, obscuring and layering the original material. Traces of text remain visible in fragments, like residues of former announcements.

The banners were instruments of institutional visibility, designed to declare, signal, and be seen. Here, they return to a gallery façade in a muted, corroded state, resembling surfaces marked by oxidation and time. What once announced something now becomes a surface that quietly holds its history. The work explores the tension between visibility and erasure, the life cycle of institutional materials, and the way cities accumulate and shed visual information.

Currently on view in Bochum:

Cudelice Brazelton IV is included in Manifesta 16. Ruhr, titled 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘢 𝘤𝘩𝘶𝘳𝘤𝘩, at Kunstkirche Christ-König, curated by Andra Rottenberg and Krzysztof Kosciuczuk.

The exhibition will be on view until October 4, 2026.

After decades of secularisation, churches in the Ruhr Area are now closing on a weekly basis, often then purchased by profit-hungry developers or left slowly to decay […] Manifesta 16 Ruhr takes place in and around a selection of the churches and responds to their situation. It asks: what can we do with these buildings? What is their meaning? How might they be preserved as social spaces? Can they contribute to the formation of a more just society?

𝘈𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘦 is a collaged steel object that echoes one of the artist’s former workplaces: Columbus Castings in Ohio where he spent his youth. Alongside his studio practice, producing industrial machinery and heavy equipment was part of Brazelton’s daily life in the American Midwest. In 𝘈𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘦, a magnetised laser-cut steel plate sticks to the window, resembling a monitor or TV displaying the now decommissioned and demolished steel foundry. An image depicting factory work is inserted like a photographic slide or film. The artist’s former coworker and friend, the rapper ConQuest Tony Phillips, produced a 14-minute track sampling sounds from the facility. Merging industrial labour with Black creative expression, 𝘈𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘦 speaks less about the romantic vision of industrial capital and more about the perseverance and preservation of the self within its working conditions.
