Juan Araujo: El Pez Que Fuma

EN • “El Pez Que Fuma” is taken from the title of the film of the same name by Román Chalbaud, set in a brothel in La Guaira, whose atmosphere remains associated with the contradictions of 1970s Venezuela, between the promise of modernisation and the country’s social reality.
In Araujo’s paintings, images and traces of Venezuelan modernity engage with European references and with different ways of conceiving time and history, thus proposing a pictorial archaeology of Venezuelan modernity, in which personal memory and the history of images converge within a single interpretative process.

EN • João Maria Gusmão’s solo exhibition “Following the White Tiger”, curated by Matthew Post, explores the tension between the tangible construction of the image – the photosensitive transparency, projection, and mechanisms of recording – and its symbolic dimension, where images operate as carriers of cultural and ideological meanings. His works reveal the image as both a material object and a site of memory and imagination.
On view until 31 October at Zachęta – National Gallery of Art in Warsaw.

Exhibition views of “Following the White Tiger” from 27 Aug to 31 Oct 2026, Zacheta - National Gallery of Art, Warsaw, Poland.

For those who remember that lost world, El pez que fuma evokes a celebrated film by Román Chalbaud about a marginal brothel in the port of La Guaira, where the grotesque and the folkloric coexist with the moral corruption of an oil-rich country proud of its triumphant modernity. (…) For Juan Araujo, the smoking fish that serves as the brothel’s emblem now welcomes us at the entrance to the gallery represents the chimerical, heterotopic creature of the Latin American modern scene: a figure that reveals the phantasmatic and contradictory dimension of its ideology, marked by the developmentalist imperative and by the conviction that inhabiting, as ‘noble savages’, an incorruptible Edenic nature.”
