Discover the exhibition SAGRADO CORAÇÃO on display at Fundação Eugénio de Almeida in Évora.

Curated by Joaquim Oliveira Caetano, this group show brings for the first time the encounter of works from our collection and the collection of the Archdiocese of Évora.

Organized into four rooms – passion, the heart, suffering, and death, presenting two art forms that perhaps share the common thread of appealing to the incontinence of feelings and the raw expression of passions: the religious art of the Modern Age, with an emphasis on the Baroque, with works from the collections of churches in the Archdiocese of Évora, and a set of contemporary works of so-called “Art Brut,” mostly made in a therapeutic context, or by artists who almost always began their practice in asylums, all of them loaned by our collection.

Happy Solstice 🌞

Embracing Summer Solstice featuring a recent acquisition from our collection, a work by Moroccan artist Anime Benchat.

Born in El Hoceima, Morocco, in 1985, Amine Benchat attended a special school and quickly developed a passion for drawing. This passion was particularly evident in adulthood, when he met the AMSAT team in Rabat, who supported him, giving him the means to commit to full-time creative work. He began exhibiting. His universe evokes a joyful world of animals, plants, and friendly figures, where color plays its expressive role to the fullest. He also began sketchbook work, based on a recurring motif that had appeared over time in his most figurative works. This motif—a circle ending with a raised accent—worked as an autonomous symbol, largely inspired by Moroccan culture, and served as a pretext for developing a serial body of work. Amine Benchat is a 2023 EgArt laureate. His work is exhibited for the first time in France in the exhibition “Brut!” Unusual geniuses and extraordinary artists” at the Miroir de Poitiers in 2023.

A self-taught artist, Xurxo Oro Claro lives and works in Allariz (Ourense). In his early practice, he developed highly textured paintings in which the collage of objects coexisted with enigmatic symbols and signs. He later turned to sculpture, producing works of a minimalist character. His sculptures employ a wide range of materials, including stone, iron, wood, stainless steel, and industrial elements. A cathartic impulse is almost always present in them, with objects that allude to death, aggression, or destruction.

Oro Claro's work is currently on display at Centro de Arte Oliva as part of the group show HORROR VACUI.

Delve into the exhibition HORROR VACUI on display at Centro de Arte Oliva

Featuring eighty-five anthropomorphic figures from our collection —animals, machines, spirits, humans, monsters, and angels—open up a tumultuous field in which anarchy and excess act as protective mechanisms against ontological uncertainty. Filling the void becomes a strategy of existential stabilisation.

Curated by Marta Jecu, this exhibition seeks to capture not only how conventions can be defied, but also the humour of inhabiting space and oneself with excess, freedom, and restlessness. These anthropomorphic sculptures seem deeply anti-modern as they open up a territory that stands in opposition to modern valorisations of abstraction, silence, spatiality, synthesis,
and containment, affirming confusion, irrational accumulation, oscillation, and vehemence. They reinforce and dismantle the principles of contemporary art, transgressing convention and extending limits.

The life and work of Giovanni Battista Podestà (Italy, 1895 - 1976) were deeply shaped by the social and political circumstances of the first half of the 20th century, in so far as the major part of his works reflects the doubts, insecurities and changes that defined that period. First, Giovanni Podestà focused on oil painting, particularly religious motifs and landscapes. Later, he started creating bas and high relief by using different recovered materials such as mirrors, paper and metal. Podestà’s work is deeply shaped by the religious and popular symbolism and can be seen as a manifest against the loss of some spiritual caused by the materialistic values that began to appear associated with a growing consumer society.

His work is among the artists from our collection that are currently on display at Fundação Eugénio de Almeida as part of the group show SAGRADO CORAÇÃO.
