Há 82 anos, no Dia D, o Douglas C-47 "Dakota" foi determinante no transporte de milhares de paraquedistas para a Normandia, marcando o início do fim da Segunda Guerra Mundial.
Após o conflito, estas aeronaves cumpriram novas missões. Em Portugal, foram fundamentais tanto na Força Aérea Portuguesa, onde desempenharam diversas funções operacionais, como na génese da TAP, fundada em 1945 por Humberto Delgado. Adaptados para o transporte de passageiros, os aviões da companhia ligaram Lisboa ao mundo, inaugurando em 1946 a histórica Linha Aérea Imperial para Angola e Moçambique.
No Museu do Ar, preservamos a memória desta aeronave extraordinária. Entre o nosso espólio, destaca-se o exemplar que pertence à TAP, unindo a história militar global, o serviço prestado à Força Aérea e os primeiros passos da aviação comercial portuguesa.

82 years ago, on D-Day, the Douglas C-47 "Dakota" played a decisive role in transporting thousands of paratroopers to Normandy, marking the beginning of the end of World War II.
After the conflict, these aircraft embarked on new missions. In Portugal, they were fundamental both to the Portuguese Air Force, where they performed various operational roles, and to the genesis of TAP, founded in 1945 by Humberto Delgado. Adapted for passenger transport, the company's aircraft connected Lisbon to the world, inaugurating the historic Imperial Air Route to Angola and Mozambique in 1946.
At the Air Museum (Museu do Ar), we preserve the memory of this extraordinary aircraft. Among our collection, we highlight the iconic plane that belongs to TAP, uniting global military history, the service provided to the Air Force, and the first steps of Portuguese commercial aviation.
