Beaconsfield Gallery Vauxhall

Beaconsfield Gallery Vauxhall The venue retains its historical and architectural character. It regards its work as contributing to this principle.

A space for artists and audiences to experience high quality, challenging, new artworks in a wide range of contemporary visual art media through commissions, group exhibitions, performances, publications and events. Beaconsfield offers a space for artists and audiences to experience high quality (hence ‘beacon’), challenging, new artworks in a wide range (hence ‘field’) of contemporary visual art

media through commissions, group exhibitions, performances, publications and events. Set up in 1994 the organisation is still run by its two artist-founder-directors – David Crawforth and Naomi Siderfin - who work collaboratively with the artists they commission from their base in the former Lambeth Ragged School in Vauxhall, central London. Beaconsfield believes that the arts should be a guardian of free speech, diversity of expression and democracy. The charity's artistic policy promotes dialogue locally, nationally and internationally and seeks to contribute to social and cultural integration. Beaconsfield recycles its waste, works on recycled paper and is probably the first and only arts organisation in London to be powered by 100% green electricity. Besides, it runs the Ragged Canteen, which serves ethically sourced seasonal dishes cooked to order, Cakehole London cakes, Monmouth coffee, fair trade teas and gluten-free selection - at affordable prices. Free Wi-fi, art magazines and week-end newspapers are provided.

‘Beaconsfield has a unique place in London’s cultural landscape. It is distinguished by its history of providing a forum for extraordinary events and exhibitions, stimulating passionate, candid and robust debate about art’s production and its ideological underpinnings, as well as providing a much-needed locus for the thriving artistic community in which it sits.’ Sheena Wagstaff, Chief Curator, Tate Modern

Join us for the opening of Surfaced, the annual exhibition at Beaconsfield Gallery Vauxhall tomorrow, Wednesday 12 November from 18:00 - 21:00!

‘Surfaced’ speaks to what arises from the deep thinking and material experimentation of the doctoral research process.

PhD research is required to bring new knowledge to a topic: to surface unspoken truths, share esoteric findings and contribute towards new ways of thinking and doing things.

‘Surfaced’ invites artist-researchers from the RCA’s School of Arts and Humanities to show their most recent research in the annual PhD exhibition curated by Beaconsfield. Some researchers are at the end of their journey while others right at the beginning. The works in this 2025 Beaconsfield exhibition have been selected to reveal the processes of surfacing new ideas and materialities in the field of contemporary art and design.

A sneak peak behind the scenes as HAPPENS is assembled at

HAPPENS links Vauxhall art-neighbours ASC Studios and Beaconsfield Gallery Vauxhall as both cultural institutions celebrate 30 years of operation in South London.

HAPPENS recognises Beaconsfield’s longstanding methodology of co-creation and artistic experimentation with artists diverse in age and identity. The link with ASC is made explicit by exhibiting the personal work of Beaconsfield’s founding-directors A.D Crawforth [] and Naomi Siderfin and their ASC studio mate Minna Haukka, together with artists Emily Mulenga [] and Ellis Parkinson, and New York-based eco-feminist A.L. Steiner – all of whom extend their commissions from Beaconsfield’s anniversary programme ‘Manifesto for Sustainable Experimentation’ – offsite at ASC Gallery [ / ].

HAPPENS reflects Beaconsfield’s commitment to the present moment. Key community relationships are strengthened through linking exhibitions that explore environmental issues at many levels.
