Hello there, Damien Ajavon! 👋 On September 3, you will be stopping by Röhsska for a lecture and panel discussion, “How Collaboration and Craft Intertwine Generations, History, and Identity.”
You view textile crafts—like weaving, knotting, and dyeing—as a fluid space for healing and community building. Why is tactile making so powerful for this?
"As a body of fluid, I see tactile making as a way to understand my environment as part of my practice. It allows me to move between materials, techniques, and ways of creating rather than being fixed to one medium. Weaving, knotting, dyeing, and working with different textures ect... become ways of responding to my surroundings and expressing identity as something fluid and constantly changing."
The evening will also feature a panel discussion on collaboration across continents and cultures. What do you hope the audience takes away from this conversation?
"I see craft as a meeting point between people, cultures, and different ways of thinking. It can create a common ground where we can connect, share experiences, and learn from one another. I would love for the audience to see craft not just as something that happens in the studio, but as a way of building and creating connections across different places and cultures. For me, being part of this conversation is also about allowing my own experience and practice to become a way of connecting, rather than creating in solitude, since craft can be a very individual practice."
