A Painting That Preserves Eleven Years of Mentorship and Growth
From Gothenburg to Canada — crossing the Atlantic with a story to tell. 🇸🇪✈️🇨🇦
A special commission from Canada. A fencing journey spanning eleven remarkable years.
Over the past few days, I have completed this very personal commissioned artwork. Today, carefully wrapped and prepared for its journey, it has been shipped from Gothenburg, Sweden, to Canada — to a new home where it will hold a story of gratitude, dedication and cherished memories.
The commission came from a Canadian collector of Chinese heritage, who wanted to create a meaningful gift to thank a fencing coach for eleven years of guidance and support.
The young athlete began training at the age of seven at a fencing club inspired by the Olympic spirit. By eighteen, the journey had led to the highest sporting achievement — becoming an Olympic champion — as well as an offer of admission to Harvard University.
Behind these extraordinary achievements lie years of discipline, perseverance, encouragement and dedication.
The athlete’s mother wanted to express her gratitude to the coach through something more personal than an ordinary gift: a painting that could preserve the meaning of those eleven years.
Photographs capture individual moments, but how can we express the emotions and memories accumulated over such a long journey?
My answer was to bring this remarkable story together on a single sheet of paper, measuring just 30 × 50 cm.
At the far end of the composition, I placed the fencing club — the place where the dream began, and where eleven years of training and growth first took shape.
A delicate, winding trail of pale blue flows through the painting, like the river of life. It represents the passage of time, the persistence required along the way, and the achievements that gradually emerge from years of dedication.
In the foreground, a fencing mask and sword stand as tangible witnesses to this chapter of youth. The Canadian maple leaf on the mask reflects the country where the athlete grew up and the cultural identity that has shaped the journey.
At the centre, the Olympic rings represent dreams, honour and the Olympic spirit. I incorporated subtle map elements representing Asia and North America, highlighted in yellow and red, to reflect the athlete’s Chinese heritage and Canadian nationality. These details give the painting a distinctly personal connection to the story it tells.
In the background, I introduced traditional Chinese calligraphy featuring a passage from The Teacher’s Way (师说), written by the Tang dynasty scholar Han Yu:
“古之学者必有师。师者，所以传道受业解惑也。”
“In ancient times, those who pursued learning always had teachers. A teacher transmits the Way, imparts knowledge and skills, and resolves doubts.”
These words express the enduring Chinese tradition of respecting teachers and honouring the wisdom they pass on.
A true mentor teaches far more than technique. They nurture discipline, courage, perseverance and the confidence to face life’s challenges.
A sword bears witness to growth.
A fencing mask preserves memories.
A winding river records the passage of time.
And the gratitude we feel for a great teacher deserves to be treasured.
For me, this commission is more than an artwork. It is an exploration of how art can tell a deeply personal life story.
A photograph may capture a moment, but a painting can preserve the years, emotions and meanings hidden behind that moment.
As I carefully wrapped the finished piece today, I felt this even more strongly.
From Gothenburg, Sweden, to Canada, this painting is now crossing the Atlantic. It carries not only eleven years of growth and achievement, but also a mother’s heartfelt gratitude to a mentor — a sentiment she hopes will be treasured for many years to come.
Sometimes, the true journey of art is not measured by how far a work travels, but by how much emotion it carries from one person to another.
May this painting become a meaningful gift to a truly deserving coach, and a lasting tribute to a remarkable chapter of youth — one that will continue to shine long after the years have passed.
