Ruby Nilsson: RECANTATION opens one week today, Thursday 10 September, 17:00-20:00. Welcome!

RECANTATION is in some ways a conceptual continuation of Nilsson’s recent host-assisted solo RESPAWN, presented at Inkonst, Malmö in February 2026. The invitation to create a new work for Index necessitates a shift from performance and the context of the stage towards a dramatisation of the exhibition space – opening up possibilities for Nilsson to play with dramaturgy through a different set of spatial, visual, textual and temporal parameters. She invokes a dystopian premonition that weaves together inspiration from historical references including medieval witch trials, religious symbolism, mystical confessional literary modes and the strange convergence between the nano-languages of trans and looksmaxxing communities.

Opening Thursday 10 September, Ruby Nilsson’s solo exhibition RECANTATION transforms Index into a ritualistic setting for the artist’s new video work of the same name.

Ruby Nilsson confronts visitors through a grim economic science fiction, a worldbuild that explores a compromised and uncomfortable future of tr*******al labor. Here, the artist follows the dark poetics of trans misogyny and unleashes it in all its unsettling and amoral glory; a move that can be read as a critique of what she regards as deeply ingrained social and cultural demands on trans artists to produce autobiographical works with an impossible moral high-ground.

The exhibition at Index is in some ways a conceptual continuation of Nilsson’s recent host-assisted solo RESPAWN, presented at Inkonst, Malmö in February 2026. Of the similarities, the artist states that “both of the works sardonically undertake tr*******al embodiment as an abomination and translate sexual biology as a potential site of supernatural horror”. The invitation to create a new work for Index necessitates a shift from performance and the context of the stage towards a dramatisation of the exhibition space – opening up possibilities for Nilsson to play with dramaturgy through a different set of spatial, visual, textual and temporal parameters.

In June, Pontus Pettersson hosted an Open Studio, inviting visitors to witness and explore how his ongoing work at Index has been developing in dialogue with the current installation of Agnė Jokšė’s exhibition. Using one of the screens in the exhibition space for an afternoon, Pettersson live-streamed the interior space within the projection walls, showing the otherwise unobserved studio he has transformed over several months.

Inviting and hosting are a core part of Pontus Pettersson’s practice. For this one-off Open Studio, new sculptural works and scores were made, including a giant form of a salted pretzel stick (salt pinne), a reassuringly familiar snack offered at exhibition openings and events. Resembling a walking stick complete with salt crystals, it could be seen both as a physical support and an also prop for social interaction, just like the smaller edible version.

Staying true to Pettersson’s working method throughout his year-long residency and performative exhibition, these ephemeral works stick around, and can currently be seen at Index alongside other works in progress and material developments.

Pontus Pettersson: AIR is on view for three more days in its current iteration, and will continue until February 2027.

This is the final week to visit Agnė Jokšė’s solo exhibition REALITY CRACKS. Index is open today 12:00-18:00. Welcome!

In Agnė Jokšė’s practice, language is used as an investigative tool for the artist’s introspective process and a material output which reveals linguistic and systemic limitations. Through the script of Daring Dreams (2022), Jokše implements a countermodel to the gendered elements of grammar in Lithuanian, inscribing an alternative grammar.

Within the universe of this filmwork, Joǩse’s model for a non-binary Lithuanian language becomes reality: a systemic shift. The breaking down of language into its composite parts is a recurring strategy for Jokšė.

Through text and image, Jokšė constructs new grammatical and linguistic frameworks to investigate and critically portray the conditions of language itself – the layering of footage from the city over images shot at close range within the domestic apartment highlighting the visual and linguistic construction of realities.

Index is open again. Welcome back! Two more weeks to visit Agnė Jokšė’s exhibition REALITY CRACKS and see Pontus Pettersson: AIR taking space within this installation.

Agnė Jokšė (b. 1993) is an artist and writer currently based in Vilnius. Using the tools characteristic to autoethnography, Jokšė tells stories in which personal experiences and past events related to contemplations of love, intimacy, relations and friendship intertwine with imaginative reflections. Works in the mediums of video and performative text often investigate questions concerning parallel histories, compassion, entangled relations, queerness and language.

Agnė Jokšė’s first solo exhibition in Sweden centres around a new film work titled Careerist (2026), in which a newly developed script, narrated as a voiceover by the artist, recontextualises visual footage filmed in a Lithuanian quarry several years prior. Conceptually and visually, the footage and voiceover align uncannily – seemingly too perfectly harmonized not to have been produced in tandem – adding to the quiet suspense of a reality that is becoming slippery and unreliable.

Pontus Pettersson’s year-long exhibition AIR has been ongoing (and continually transforming) within Index space since February.

Over the course of one full year, choreographer, artist, and curator Pontus Pettersson is artist-in-residence at Index—an unofficial/official residency that functions as both exhibition and performance—playing with the juxtaposed roles (or non-roles) of institutions and artists, exploring how these relationships can generate meaningful exchange or parasitic structures.

Ars Viva Summer 2016 – Flaka Haliti, Hanne Lippard, Calla Henkel & Max Pitegoff

Ten years ago this summer, during Axel Wieder’s tenure as director of Index, this group exhibition presented new works by the recipients of the ars viva award 2016 – Flaka Haliti, Hanne Lippard, and the duo Calla Henkel & Max Pitegoff – produced specifically for the spaces at Index.

The works by Calla Henkel & Max Pitegoff, Flaka Haliti and Hanne Lippard observed what effects an increasing formatting of the self and the continuous adaptation of appearance and behavior have on personal and professional relationships. In an impressively objective, poetic and humorous way, the artists examine their own roles within their social, discursive and urban contexts. Introducing displacement at the interface between subjectivity and projection, they discuss questions of representation, isolation and proximity, capitulation and resilience.

The exhibition opened with Hanne Lippard’s performance “c u l8tr elevator”, with lights by Calla Henkel & Max Pitegoff (with Joe Kay) on a specifically built outdoor stage on the Kungsbro strand waterfront that was active throughout summer 2016.

Letting the Days Go By – Summer 2018

Looking back to June 2018 when Index’ summer festival Letting the Days Go By presented six consecutive summer evenings celebrating the season in a spirit of ease and experimentation.

Featuring a series of events, workshops, performances, collaborations and works-in-progress, the festival takes place both in and around the Index premises on Kungsbro strand featuring Stockholm based and international artists and collectives. Letting the Days Go By is a celebration of the groups and communities, both old and new, that exist within Index’ network and its neighbourhood.

Using Index’ space and its surrounding area with its existing networks and artistic communities to bring people together, Letting the Days Go By experiments with new ways of strengthening and broadening dialogues, meeting and sharing with different audiences. The festival opens up questions around the notion of community – what it does, what it might mean to us today and what it may become in the future.

You may find yourself calling a village to ask advice, at a picnic with Portugal in the 60s, articulating your own art writing, talking to trees, making new experiments in listening or find yourself baking bread in a stranger’s home. The festival celebrates the groups and communities, both old and new, that exist within Index’ network and its neighborhood. The festival is an invitation to come together and feel the water flow by underground.

Festival artists and collectives included: Sanna Marander & Niklas Tafra, Susanna Jablonski & Cara Tolmie, Poste Restante, Ulla-Britta Westergren & Johanna Rosenlund, OEI, Lizzie Lloyd, Kasia Wolińska & Frida Sandström, Caitlin Dear & Thomas Schmocker, Research Lab, Johnny Chang, Brödmassan, Sam Icklow & Alistair Watts and Ana-Maria Hadji-Culea.

The festival was co-hosted by the Index Teen Advisory Board – Désirée Bayibsa, Emmanuel Angelos Zavalis, Mikaela Wei, Viola Flø Brøther, Moa Lundborg and Björn Hjelm. The festival was organized and curated by the 208 Index team: Bronwyn Bailey-Charteris, Emmeli Person and Nina Øverli.
