Fieldwork on the remote island of Gotska Sandön, located in the middle of the Baltic Sea, as part of the "Sea Change" project. This phase focused on geophysical mapping in collaboration with Immo Trinks and Stefan Krojer from the Vienna Institute for Archaeological Science (VIAS) at the University of Vienna.
At the small burial site we previously test-surveyed, one can clearly see a vast number of buried individuals situated at various depths within the sand. At the site known as "Gamla gården" (The Old Farm)—where a settlement existed in the 19th century—we can also see traces of what appear to be much older settlement remains deep beneath these layers. Several prehistoric finds have been made on the farm terrace west of the site, including Roman coins, and we have also dated hearths to the Early Iron Age. Are the traces we see beneath the 19th-century houses at Gamla gården remnants of this earlier activity?
Loose finds recovered from the beaches during this phase included a crossbow bolt head, a medieval lead cloth seal, and a cut fragment of an Arabic coin (the second such coin we have found on the island).
The research on Gotska Sandön is a collaboration between MARIS (Södertörn University), Uppsala University (Campus Gotland), the Gotland Museum, and Västervik Museum, with support from the VOTO Foundation and the De Badande Vännerna Foundation.
