The Chinese phoenix is a composite bird with the head of a pheasant, the body of a duck, the tail of a peacock, the legs of a crane, the mouth of a parrot, and the wings of a swallow.

Gandaberunda is a majestic bird with two eagle heads and a formidable peacock-like plumage. It is believed to be a fierce form of Narasimha, the fourth avatar of Vishnu.

Native to island Southeast Asia, the peacock appears widely in the textiles, architecture, and decorative art of the region. In Indonesia, it became a striking motif in batik design, appearing in everything from the restricted court patterns of nineteenth-century Yogyakarta and Surakarta to the fashionable textiles of twentieth-century Jakarta.

Join speaker Peter Lee as he traces the stylistic journey of the peacock across Indonesia’s batik traditions.

Peacocks have long symbolised beauty and opulence across Asia, their graceful forms inspiring artists and craftsmen through centuries of trade and exchange. The motif appears across artistic media from luxury objects to everyday adornment.

In textiles, peacocks enliven garments across the region and are a favourite motif in Javanese batiks, especially those from Pekalongan — a cosmopolitan port shaped by generations of cultural interaction.

Now on display at Peacock Power, only at The Peranakan Museum.
