Singapore Art Museum

Singapore Art Museum SAM is a Museum In Action, bringing art experiences into everyday spaces. Singapore Art Museum opened in 1996 as the first art museum in Singapore.

Also known as SAM, we present contemporary art from a Southeast Asian perspective for artists, art lovers and the art curious in multiple venues across the island, including a new venue in the historic port area of Tanjong Pagar. SAM is building one of the world's most important public collections of Southeast Asian contemporary art, with the aim of connecting the art and the artists to the public

and future generations through exhibitions and programmes. SAM is working towards a humane and sustainable future by committing to responsible practices within its processes. For more information, visit www.singaporeartmuseum.sg.

Not every story reveals itself at first glance. What happens when we spend a little more time with an artwork?

Sometimes, the smallest details open up bigger questions about memory, perspective, identity, and the stories we carry with us.

From Barbie dolls and vintage signboards to rare books and historical photographs, every collection tells a story.

Join a panel of collectors as they reflect on how objects are chosen, preserved, and shared, and how meaning and value can grow through these acts of care. More than a collection of things, these objects offer a way of understanding the people, histories, and memories connected to them.

Enjoy free admission to ๐˜›๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ฌ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜–๐˜ฃ๐˜ซ๐˜ฆ๐˜ค๐˜ต๐˜ด and ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜“๐˜ช๐˜ท๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜™๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ through 23 July. Learn more about the programme and reserve your spot today: bit.ly/InConversationWithCollectors

Is what we see reality, or simply our perception of it?

In ๐˜๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ฉ๐˜ช ๐˜š๐˜ถ๐˜จ๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ: ๐˜๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ฎ I๐˜ด ๐˜Œ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฑ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ด, photography, sculpture and calligraphy become reflections of perception itself, revealing not just what we see, but how we see it. Shaped by memory, time and personal experience, each encounter with the work unfolds differently.

Windows become doorways. Rest takes shape through sitting, leaning, waiting, watching.

Assimilating into the century-old architecture of the Arsenaleโ€™s Sale dโ€™Armi, ๐˜ผ ๐™‹๐™–๐™ช๐™จ๐™š transforms the Singapore Pavilion into a space where rest unfolds through the bodyโ€™s movement, stillness and presence.

Built from larch wood โ€” the same timber historically used for the Arsenaleโ€™s floors and Veniceโ€™s foundations โ€” shallow stepped platforms follow the Pavilionโ€™s original flooring before angling towards its walls and windows. Rather than imposing onto the historic structure, the intervention blends into it, blurring the line between existing architecture and artwork.

There are no fixed routes or instructions. Visitors move through the space naturally, finding their own rhythm of rest and become part of the work through each movement, conversation and moment of stillness.

Swipe through for a closer look at how ๐˜ผ ๐™‹๐™–๐™ช๐™จ๐™š inhabits the Singapore Pavilion and invites visitors to pause, linger and experience rest in their own way.

Singapore Art Museum is pleased to announce the publication ๐˜ผ๐™ข๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™๐™– ๐™ƒ๐™š๐™ฃ๐™œ: ๐™Š๐™ฃ ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™Š๐™ฃ

Published in conjunction with ๐˜ผ ๐™‹๐™–๐™ช๐™จ๐™š โ€” Amanda Hengโ€™s exhibition for the Singapore Pavilion at the 61st Venice Biennale (May 9โ€“November 22, 2026).

This book brings together four decades of Hengโ€™s artistic practice and sustained experimentation, from the artistโ€™s early drawings of the female body to the photographic studies and artworks with herself and her mother, and the performances she staged in the public spaces of Singapore and elsewhere.

Edited by curator Selene Yap, the book includes essays by curator Anca Rujoiu, critic Lee Weng Choy, architectural theorist Lilian Chee, and anthropologist Souchou Yao, as well as Hengโ€™s own distinct voice, which accompanies a series of visual essays of her workโ€”much of it seen here for the first time.
