Located within the depths of the historic and luxuriant Fort Canning Hill, the Battlebox is Singapore’s only World War II bunker that is still operational, albeit as a historic site, today. Built in 1936 and completed in 1939, the Battlebox served as the headquarters for the defending Allied forces against the invading Japanese army in the final days of the Malayan Campaign (8 Dec 1941 — 15 Feb 1942). It was here that Lieutenant-General Arthur Percival and 11 other commanders made the decision to surrender Singapore to the Japanese, resulting in possibly the greatest defeat of a British army ever in battle and the beginning of 3 ½ years of the Japanese Occupation of Singapore.

History fans, gather!

What happens when a pivotal moment from the Fall of Singapore is brought to the tabletop inside the very bunker where Lieutenant-General Arthur Percival oversaw the island’s final defence?

In this episode of Lessons from the Front, partially filmed at Battlebox, let our history partners re-enact the fighting around Bukit Timah on 11–12 February 1942.

From the battlefield of the past to the leaders of tomorrow.

Following last week's visit by 9AMB, we were honoured to welcome the future leaders of the Singapore Armed Forces - 70 cadets from Officer Cadets School - to Battlebox today.

It is heartening to see history becoming part of their training and learning journey. A visit to Battlebox is not merely about understanding what happened in the past, but also about reflecting on leadership, decision-making, preparedness and the consequences of choices made during uncertain times.

Through the stories of the Fall of Singapore and the events leading to the surrender in 1942, the cadets gained a deeper appreciation of the challenges faced by leaders and soldiers of that time. The experience also offered an opportunity to reflect on the importance of making informed decisions under pressure, learning from past experiences and understanding the impact of leadership during a crisis.

Yesterday’s history. Tomorrow’s leadership.

We look forward to welcoming more future leaders through the doors of Battlebox.

What a day at Battlebox!

We had the pleasure of welcoming 215 specialists from the 9th Army Maintenance Base for a journey through history at Battlebox and Fort Canning Park.

From stepping inside Singapore’s historic WWII underground command centre to exploring the rich heritage of Fort Canning, the visit brought history beyond textbook pages - to the very place where it happened.

Seeing 215 visitors experiencing and discovering our wartime heritage together was truly a wonderful sight! A big thank you to the 9th Army Maintenance Base for choosing Battlebox as part of your learning journey. We hope everyone left with new discoveries, meaningful memories and a deeper appreciation of Singapore’s history.
