Since March this year, Gallery NaWei has been preparing SPECTRA — Boo Sze Yang’s solo exhibition. Conceived as a reflection on the artist’s thirty-year creative journey, the exhibition also resonates with the gallery’s 30th anniversary and Singapore’s 60th year of nationhood. Adding to its significance, Boo Sze Yang received the Silver Award (Established Artist Category) at the 2025 UOB Painting of the Year competition on 12 November.
SPECTRA brings together three milestones: Boo Sze Yang turns sixty; his practice reaches its thirtieth year; and Gallery NaWei marks three decades of promoting the arts. Over these years, both the artist and the gallery have remained steadfast in their pursuits — Boo in his continual exploration of painting, and the gallery in supporting diverse artistic voices. Though their paths differ, they share a commitment to artistic growth. This exhibition is the eighth in the gallery’s 30th anniversary programme and concludes our 2025 exhibitions.
As Boo’s 19th solo exhibition, SPECTRA presents works across the different phases of his practice — from figuration to abstraction, from urban landscapes and religious iconography to recent studies of water, light, and space. Forms surface, drift, and dissolve, creating a spectrum of memory and perception, and reflecting the artist’s ongoing inquiry into painting as “a field of seeing and thinking.”
The Analects states: “At thirty, one stands firm; at forty, one has no doubts; at fifty, one understands destiny; at sixty, one’s ear is attuned.” If independence and maturity define the earlier stages, then “attunement at sixty” suggests clarity, openness, and acceptance. By naming the exhibition SPECTRA (《惑》), we return to the human experience of sensing the world — recognising that life unfolds not in a straight line, but in shifting layers like a spectrum; and that insight emerges gradually, as we encounter “mountains beyond mountains.”
Here, “惑” does not denote confusion, but a heightened sensitivity formed through experience. Sixty widens one’s vision; thirty grounds one’s roots. Between knowing and unknowing, between the visible and the invisible, we learn to observe quietly.
SPECTRA invites viewers into this meeting of time and space — to listen to the resonances that arise between form and formlessness.
