The talk will take place on Saturday, 7 March 2026, at 2 PM at West Eden Gallery, Sukhumvit 31.

This conversation features Akkara Naktamna and Manit Sriwanichpoom, two artists exhibiting in this show. It offers an opportunity to hear directly from them as they share insights into the concepts behind their works, their sources of inspiration, and their artistic processes for “DELUSIONAL – หลงผิด.”

In August 2021—four years ago—a video clip surfaced showing a group of police officers torturing a suspect using a simple yet brutal method: placing a plastic shopping bag over his head. Tragically, the officers tightened the bag for too long, causing the suspect to suffocate and die in police custody, right in the interrogation room of a police station.

Manit Sriwanichpoom has drawn inspiration from this unforgettable act of brutality for his new series, “Portraits of Thai Citizen,” consisting of six works. The series reflects the idea that the face of a Thai citizen is no different from having a plastic bag patterned with the colors of the national flag permanently covering their head. These are the colors of the three core ideological pillars—Nation, Religion, Monarchy—which wield influence and power greater than the constitution that is meant to guarantee rights and freedoms.

สิงหาคม 2564 หรือ 4 ปีก่อน มีคลิปวิดีโอภาพตำรวจกลุ่มหนึ่ง กำลังซ้อมผู้ต้องหาด้วยวิธีง่ายๆ แต่เหี้ยมโหด คือเอาถุงหิ้วพลาสติกคลุมหัว เคราะห์ร้ายตำรวจพลั้งมือผูกรัดถุงแน่นนานไปหน่อย ทำให้ผู้ต้องหาขาดอากาศหายใจจนเสียชีวิตคามือตำรวจกลางห้องสอบสวนของโรงพัก

มานิต ศรีวานิชภูมิ นำเหตุการณ์เหี้ยมโหดที่ยากจะลืมดังกล่าวมาเป็นแรงบันดาลใจในงานชุดใหม่ “ภาพเหมือนบุคคลพลเมืองไทย” จำนวน 6 ชิ้น เพื่อสะท้อนให้เห็นว่า หน้าตาพลเมืองไทยนั้นไม่ต่างกับการมีถุงพลาสติกลายทางสีธงชาติครอบหัวอยู่ตลอดเวลา นี่คือสีของอุดมการณ์สามเสาหลัก ‘ชาติ - ศาสน์ – กษัตริย์’ ที่มีอิทธิพลและอำนาจเหนือกว่ารัฐธรรมนูญอันว่าด้วยสิทธิและเสรีภาพ

The Democracy Monument proudly proclaims that Thailand is a civilized democratic nation. However, the reality is not quite so perfect. Frequent interference from certain powers has made the path of Thai democracy rough and unstable. Since the political transition in 1932, there have been 13 coups and 20 constitutions. These facts serve as a much clearer testament to our history than a concrete monument used merely as a traffic roundabout or a place for flower decorations.

In this photography series, I captured the Democracy Monument through a television screen suffering from signal interference. The static twisted the images into broken waves. Locals refer to this phenomenon as a ”failing image.“ Thai democracy resembles these images—fragile, sensitive, and dreamlike. It is easily interfered with and prone to failure. Ultimately, it forces the people to rise up and smack the back of the television to make the picture watchable again.

อนุสาวรีย์ประชาธิปไตยเป็นเหมือนตัวแทนที่ป่าวประกาศอย่างภาคภูมิว่า ประเทศไทยปกครองด้วยระบอบประชาธิปไตยที่ดูมีความเจริญทัดเทียมอารยประเทศ แต่ความเป็นจริงอาจไม่ได้สวยหรูขนาดนั้น คลื่นรบกวนมากมายแทรกแซงมาเป็นระยะๆ โดยอำนาจบางอย่าง ทำให้ประชาธิปไตยของไทยเดินทางอย่างกระท่อนกระแท่น ตั้งแต่เปลี่ยนการปกครองในปีพ.ศ. 2475 มีการรัฐประหาร 13 ครั้ง จำนวนรัฐธรรมนูญที่มีมากถึง 20 ฉบับ เป็นเสมือนหลักฐานที่โดดเด่น และสื่อความหมายมากกว่าอนุสาวรีย์ปูนที่เอาไว้ให้รถขับรถวนผ่านหรือเอาไว้วางกระถางดอกไม้เสียด้วยซ้ำ

งานภาพถ่ายชุดนี้ คือการถ่ายภาพอนุสาวรีย์ประชาธิปไตยจากหน้าจอทีวีที่เกิดสัญญาณรบกวนจนทำให้เกิดภาพที่บิดเกลียว เป็นคลื่นขาดๆ หายๆ ชาวบ้านเรียกปรากฎการณ์นี้ว่า “ภาพล้ม” ประชาธิปไตยไทยก็เหมือนกับภาพเหล่านี้ เปราะบาง อ่อนไหวราวกับภาพฝัน แทรกแซงง่าย ล้มง่าย จนในที่สุดบีบให้ประชาชนต้องลุกขึ้นเอามือไปตบหลังทีวีให้ภาพกลับมาดูได้อีกครั้ง

Bringing together works by Manit Sriwanichpoom and Akkara Naktamna, the exhibition examines the suffocating realities of life under Thailand’s political and ideological structures. It exposes Thai citizenship as a condition shaped by systemic failure rather than democratic participation.

Get to know the second artist of “DELUSIONAL - หลงผิด” exhibition – Manit Sriwanichpoom

Manit Sriwanichpoom One of Thailand’s leading photo artists, his social and political works have been exhibited worldwide including in the Kasseler Kunstverein, Saatchi Gallery, RAY Fotografieprojekte, the Centre Pompidou, the Asia Pacific Triennial, Gwangju Biennaleand the Venice Biennale.

Manit’s works are also collected by important museums including in the Maison Europeenne de la Photographie, DZ Bank, Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Queensland Art Gallery, National Gallery Singapore and well known private collectors. In 2007 he was awarded the Higashikawa Overseas Photographer Prize from Japan and 2014 the Chevalier des Arts et Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture.

มานิต ศรีวานิชภูมิ ศิลปินภาพถ่ายผู้สร้างสรรค์และบุกเบิกวงการภาพถ่ายร่วมสมัยของไทยมาอย่างยาวนาน ผลงานอันเต็มไปด้วยสีสันของเขามีเนื้อหาเสียดสีวิพากษ์วิจารณ์สังคม การเมือง และศาสนา ทั้งเคยเข้าร่วมแสดงในนิทรรศการและเทศกาลศิลปะนานาชาติสำคัญๆ มาแล้วมากมาย อาทิ เวนิส เบียนนาเล่, ฟูโกโอกะ เอเชียน อาร์ต ไทรเอ็นเนียล, เอเชีย-แฟซิฟิก ไทรเอ็นเนียล, กวางจู เบียนนาเล่ และ โฟโต้ เอสปาญ่า เป็นต้น

ผลงานของเขายังได้รับการสะสมโดยพิพิธภัณฑ์นานาชาติ อาทิ Maison Europeenne de la Photographie, Deutsche Bank, Queensland Art Gallery, National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery Singapore และ Asian Art Museum of San Francisco ในปี 2550 เขาได้รับรางวัล Higashikawa Photo Prize จากญี่ปุ่น และปี 2557 กระทรวงวัฒนธรรมฝรั่งเศสได้มอบเครื่องราชย์อิสริยาภรณ์ด้านศิลปศาสตร์ให้แก่เขา นอกจากนี้มานิตยังเป็นอาจารย์พิเศษสอนวิชาภาพถ่ายร่วมสมัยให้กับคณะนิเทศศาสตร์ จุฬาฯ และเป็นวิทยากรรับเชิญให้กับสถาบันภาพถ่ายในต่างประเทศอีกด้วย

Get to know the first artist behind the “DELUSIONAL - หลงผิด” exhibition – Akkara Naktamna

Akkara Naktamna is a photo artist and curator. His work has been featured in numerous photography festivals. His photobook, Signs, was showcased at the NY Art Book Fair 2016 at MoMA PS1 and was selected for the Anamorphosis Prize 2016, leading to its inclusion in the Franklin Furnace Archive and the MoMA Library.

In 2016, Akkara founded CTypeMag, and in 2021, he opened a photography gallery in Bangkok dedicated to supporting contemporary photography globally, with a particular focus on emerging artists. He has curated several notable exhibitions, including ”The Interpreter“ (2022) and ”Photography Never Lies“ (2024). In 2025, he authored the book Notes on Photography (ข้อสังเกตบางประการเกี่ยวกับศิลปะภาพถ่าย). Currently, Akkara works as a photographer and a curator at Kathmandu Photo Gallery.

อัครา นักทำนา เป็นศิลปินภาพถ่ายและภัณฑารักษ์ งานภาพถ่ายของเขาได้เข้าร่วมแสดงในหลายๆ เทศกาลภาพถ่าย อีกทั้ง “Sign” หนังสือภาพถ่ายของเขายังได้ถูกนำเสนอในงาน NY Art Book Fair 2016 ที่จัดขึ้น ณ MoMA PS1 และถูกจัดเก็บไว้ที่ Franklin Furnace Archive and MoMA Library ซึ่งเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของ Anamorphosis Prize 2016

อัคราได้ก่อตั้ง CTypeMag ตั้งแต่ปี 2016 และเปิดแกลลอรี่ภาพถ่ายในกรุงเทพฯ ในปี 2021 โดยมุ่งหวังที่จะสนับสนุนศิลปะภาพถ่ายร่วมสมัยจากทั่วโลกโดยเฉพาะศิลปินที่ยังไม่เป็นที่รู้จัก ในส่วนของการเป็นภัณฑารักษ์ อัคราคัดเลือกผลงานภาพถ่ายไปจัดแสดงในหลาย ๆ นิทรรศการ เช่น นิทรรศการภาพถ่ายกลุ่ม “นักตีความ” ในปี 2022 นิทรรศการ”ภาพถ่ายไม่โกหก“ ในปี 2024 มากไปกว่านั้น อัครายังได้เขียนหนังสือ ”ข้อสังเกตบางประการเกี่ยวกับศิลปะภาพถ่าย“ ขึ้นมา ปัจจุบันนี้ อัคราเป็นศิลปินภาพถ่าย และภัณฑารักษ์ให้กับทางคัดมันดูโฟโต้แกลลอรี่

West Eden in collaboration with 1PROJECTS presents “DELUSIONAL - หลงผิด”, the first exhibition in our Shadow Archives series. This exhibition explores the state of democracy in Thailand under a political system claiming to be democratic but systematically denying its essence.

Bringing together works by Manit Sriwanichpoom and Akkara Naktamna, the exhibition examine the suffocating
realities of life under Thailand’s political and ideological structures. It exposes Thai citizenship as a condition
shaped by systemic failure rather than democratic participation.

Through powerful visual metaphors, both artists reveal how state power controls, obscures, and manipulates the
lives and freedoms of Thai people who are forced to endure the consequences of that malfunction. The artists’
works symbolize how systems of power constrict, distort, and ultimately dehumanize the people they claim to
serve.

What does it mean to be a citizen in a democratic nation when both air and vision are controlled by forces beyond
one’s reach? Does the Thai public hold false beliefs? Do the artists hold false beliefs? Do we hold false judgements
about external reality despite evidence to the contrary?

In a world saturated with branding and commercial symbols, technology is gradually reshaping the meaning of what we take for granted—often to the point where we forget to notice how everyday objects are quietly transformed into commercial assets.

This concern is addressed directly in ”It’s plastic but trust me,“ a work from Dao Wasiksiri’s series ”Conversation with the Past.“ The artist foregrounds a small plastic card as a potent symbol of how daily acts of consumption are bound to transnational financial systems. Through this gesture, the work traces how human behaviour is subtly reconfigured, how habits of spending, trust, and value are seamlessly absorbed into invisible infrastructures of capital.

ท่ามกลางโลกที่รายล้อมไปด้วยภาพลักษณ์และสัญลักษณ์ทางการค้า เทคโนโลยีกำลังค่อย ๆ เปลี่ยนความหมายของสิ่งที่เราคุ้นเคย จนเราเผลอลืมสังเกตว่า สิ่งของในชีวิตประจำวันกำลังถูกทำให้กลายเป็นทรัพย์สินเชิงพาณิชย์ไปทีละเล็กน้อย

เช่นเดียวกับผลงาน “It's plastic but trust me” ที่อยู่ในชุด Conversation with the past ของศิลปิน ดาว วาสิกศิริ ที่สะท้อนประเด็นนี้อย่างตรงไปตรงมา ผ่านการหยิบยก “บัตรพลาสติก” ใบเล็ก ๆ ขึ้นมาเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของการผูกโยงการใช้จ่ายในชีวิตประจำวัน เข้ากับระบบการเงินข้ามชาติ จนพฤติกรรมการใช้จ่ายของมนุษย์ค่อย ๆ แปรเปลี่ยนไปอย่างแนบเนียน

The work of Dow Wasiksiri, one of Thailand's most successful and celebrated photographers, has been recognized worldwide. Son of a Thai diplomat, Wasiksiri spent his childhood in different Western countries, according to where his father was posted. This multi-cultural experience has enabled Wasiksiri to view own country and people with a dual insider-outsider perspective.

Dao Wasiksiri’s work, currently on view in the exhibition Crossroads at Espace Gallery in Geneva, Switzerland, is part of his series "Conversation with the Past." In this body of work, the artist engages in an imagined dialogue with the people captured in old photographs,as if they were still alive,sharing with them what the world has gained, lost, or irrevocably changed over time.

ดาว วาสิกศิริถือเป็นช่างภาพที่มีชื่อเสียงและประสบความสำเร็จคนหนึ่งของประเทศไทย และเนื่องจากมีบิดาเป็นนักการทูต ดาวจึงได้ใช้ชีวิตเติบโตอยู่ในต่างประเทศเป็นเวลานานนับหลายปี ไม่ว่าจะเป็นที่ออสเตรเลีย นิวซีแลนด์ หรือสหรัฐอเมริกา ซึ่งประสบการณ์ที่ได้สั่งสมมาจากหลากหลายสังคมและวัฒนธรรมนั้น ทำให้ดาวสามารถมองเมืองไทยและคนไทยได้จากมุมมองแบบทั้งคนไทยและคนต่างชาติ

ผลงานของดาว วาสิกศิริ ที่กำลังแสดงอยู่ในนิทรรศการ "Crossroads" ที่ “Crossroads” ณ Espace Gallery กรุงเจนีวา ประเทศสวิตเซอร์แลนด์ คือส่วนหนึ่งจากซีรีส์ “Conversation with the Past” ผลงานที่เกิดจากความตั้งใจของศิลปินในการสนทนากับกับผู้คนในภาพถ่ายราวกับพวกเขายังคงมีชีวิตอยู่ ผ่านการบอกเล่าเรื่องราวของโลกที่หมุนไปว่ามีสิ่งใดเปลี่ยนแปลง หรือได้สูญเสียสิ่งใดไปบ้าง คล้ายภาพสะท้อนระหว่างอดีตและปัจจุบัน

Today, we celebrate the birthday of Thai artist . Last year, West Eden had the privilege of presenting his work in the exhibition Anthropocene, a collaboration with 1PROJECTS that both inspired and challenged us.

A conceptual artist of rare sensitivity, Phornphop examines the complexities of human thought, perception, and consequence. His works in Anthropocene confront the impact of human progress on the planet, inviting contemplation on transformation, responsibility, and renewal.

On this occasion, we extend our warmest wishes to Phornphop Sittirukl, for his continued pursuit of ideas that provoke dialogue, deepen awareness, and imagine new possibilities for the future.
