Elsewhere: Echoes Across Border
This project brings together three works made in different places and shaped by different histories. Together, they ask how people living on the margins of nations and institutions perceive others and imagine the world. Rather than treating Pattani simply as an exhibition venue, the project approaches it as a site where layered histories, memories, and perspectives converge.
Man from a Distant Planet (2018) imagines a city in conflict-ridden Pattani where aliens and Muslims coexist, using science fiction to unsettle familiar media images of conflict. The Man Who Cannot Use Telepathy (2023) begins with an alternate history in which the Imperial Japanese Army developed telepathy, following a young man excluded from a society where telepathy is universal. The work explores how communities are shaped through invisible rules and how exclusion is produced. The new work, Listen: Fukushima–Pattani (2026), brings recordings of birds and insects from Fukushima's post-nuclear exclusion zone into Pattani's public space, connecting two landscapes marked by disaster and conflict through the embodied act of listening.
Here, Elsewhere refers to places that exist beyond the dominant narratives of nations and the media, where disconnected experiences begin to resonate through imagination. By presenting this project in Pattani, the exhibition positions the region not as a symbol of conflict, but as a point of departure for rethinking the world's margins. Echoing across borders and histories, the works offer another way of seeing contemporary society from Pattani.
