Q&A session of “The Unfinished Work of Seeing”
an afternoon conversation with artist Nakrob Moonmanas and curator Alex Ungprateeb Flynn, moderated by Kasamaponn Saengsuratham, to explore the questions at the heart of รูปสุวรรณศิวิไลซ์: Metamorphosis in Gold.
Moving between anthropological and curatorial inquiry, archival research and speculative practice, the discussion takes as its starting point the figure of Kanang — a Maniq child brought to the court of Rama V within the broader project of ศิวิไลซ์, civilisation — and asks what it means to see across difference, to question what the historical record can hold, and to consider the potential of art to remake what remains unresolved. The conversation will be followed by a curator-led walk through the exhibition.

About the Artist
Nakrob Moonmanas (b.1990) is a visual artist based in Bangkok, primarily working with Thai literature and history as well as their discourse and relations to the global narrative.

His focus centers on exploring memories of Thai visual arts and cultures through the process of collage, as he endeavors to unveil and question them in various forms and dimensions. Infused with a contemporary aesthetic, the juxtaposition of local and exotic fragments creates an alternative chronicle, prompting a reexamination of the past.

🌈 In Hope Aspiration Happiness, Jamilah Haji transforms embroidery into a collaborative act of healing. Inviting children to draw their dreams and aspirations, the artist incorporates their drawings directly into the work, tracing and stitching over them through intricate embroidery.

Haji turns personal expression into collective storytelling using textile as a medium of care, emotional healing, and empowerment. Rooted in faith and community, the work reflects hope, resilience, and the importance of nurturing future generations through creativity and compassion.

🧵🪷Eri Imamura transforms vintage kimono fabric into life-sized sculptural works through the intricate craftsmanship of beadwork. Merging textile tradition with contemporary symbolism, her practice reflects on the social expectations placed upon women in Japanese society.

Layered throughout her works are symbolic forms resembling the female o***y, reflecting societal expectations imposed upon women, while references to the Medicine Buddha embody the artist’s wish for healing and protection for women affected by social pressure and emotional burden.

Hidden wave and radiation motifs repeatedly appear within each sculpture, referencing the tsunami and nuclear incident that continue to shape Japan’s collective memory. Every detail within Imamura’s works is intentionally interconnected and become part of a larger narrative that reflects society, cultural identity, and the complexities of the modern world.
