French Empire Allegorical Ormolu Clock of Astronomy Science - Representing Astronomy with Two Putti -
Very unique and beautiful Empire clock. The combination of red marble and the gillt bronze make this clock very special. The clock is built on four square bronze-plated legs. The plinth consists of dark red marble, which is decorated with a beautiful gilt edge. there are three elements friezed bas-relief on the base symbolizing Art and Sciences. The centre image shows a lesson on astronomy using a group of putto, the iconic classical figure of love, heaven, prosperity and leisure with the a bust of the goddess of wisdom Athena and her attribute. Measuring instruments and musical instruments ormolu plaques are attached on the both sides. On top of the clock are two putti look at each other to discuss and studying astronomy science with the globe in the centre top of the clockwork housing. This museum quality Empire mantel clock has been professionally cleaned and is in a perfect condition with beautiful mercury gilding. The movement has a 8-day going train, striking train and central date indication. and the back plate. The white enameled dial, signed “Deniere bronzier a paris“, the magnificent case is attributed to one of the top famous bronzier during early 19th century.
