Selma Feriani Gallery A cultural hub that places Tunisia on the contemporary art map, while revitalising its cultural legacies.

A contemporary art gallery based between Tunis and London that supports the growing art infrastructure in Tunisia and North Africa, offering artists a global platform within a nurturing environment and with exceptional local and international curation. Established in 2013 in London and then in Sidi Bou Saïd, Tunis, Selma Feriani’s ongoing mission has been to seek out both emerging and established contemporary artists from the MENA region and beyond, supporting their long-term career development and facilitating their recognition financially, critically and historically. To date, the gallery has presented a progressive, politically and socially conscious programme, organising critically acclaimed exhibitions, installing public interventions internationally. Providing a platform for ongoing discourse between Europe and Africa, Selma Feriani’s aim is to create balanced opportunities for exploration, research and exchange between the two continents, for artists, professionals and the public. By supporting the growing art infrastructure in Tunisia and North Africa, the gallery offers artists a global platform within a nurturing environment and with exceptional local and international curation. Founded in 2021, the gallery’s residency programme, L’Atelier, is an integral part of its mission to nurture and showcase artists wishing to springboard their careers and regularly organises and participates in not-for-profit activities such as screenings, workshops, education programmes, and talks in collaboration with various institutions and art organizations. The gallery is behind the practice development of artists such as Maha Malluh, Nidhal Chamekh, Malek Gnaoui, M'barek Bouhchichi, Massinissa Selmani, Elena Damiani and Nicene Kossentini. In January 2024, the gallery launches a new purpose-built, museum-standard space in the rapidly growing Tunis Lake district, becoming Selma Feriani’s primary address. The first commercial space of its kind in North Africa, it is designed by architect Chacha Atallah and spans 2000m2. Boasting 800sqm of museum-quality exhibition space across three rooms, a library and bookshop and an annual outdoor sculpture commission in its adjoining garden, the gallery will host rich public and education programmes placing particular emphasis on local communities. The introduction of the new institutional standard exhibition space champions the further growth of a meaningful cultural network for emerging and established artists from Tunisia and beyond.

WINGED STONE

on view until November 14 in the mezzanine, at Selma Feriani Gallery, Tunis.

“The artist’s preoccupation is with watching the world, with anticipating its emollience and resistance. Across his work, interiors and exteriors delightfully whisper to one another. In Espejo’s paintings, the minuteness of the small object is repeatedly placed beside what exceeds it; the tabletop and the landscape, the hand and the horizon, the stone and the star. From the generous flutter of a glimmer spread over his surroundings to the harboured memories that infiltrate those rays, the surfaces of his paintings may begin from the residue of meditating the landscape en plein air, or from the company of the objects that surround him in the studio. Yet, they also dispense of images beyond just their inner motion.”

ELENA DAMIANI
SUBSURFACE

on view through November 14
in the main space, at Selma Feriani Gallery

“The works gathered in Subsurface span approximately fifteen years of Damiani’s practice, but their juxtaposition does not propose a retrospective chronology. Rather, it establishes a field of correspondences through which a set of relationships emerges that may remain less visible across different moments of her practice. Across geological matter, landscape images, traces and shifting surfaces, Damiani returns to a question that cannot be answered from the surface alone: how does matter acquire form, and what timescales remain embedded within it? Across different registers, her works approach form not as something provisional. The movement between different states of matter resists the idea that a form reaches a final state. They remain open to rearrangement, whether through physical movement, geological force, optical instability, or the passage of time.”

From the making of Elena Damiani's Subsurface opening next Friday, 18 September, at Selma Feriani Gallery, Tunis.

“Growing up in Lima, surrounded by desert and dry mountains, she began collecting stones and fragments as a child. The impulse has remained, but the question has changed: how is the earth shaped, and what can matter tell us about the time through which it has taken form? Her turn toward geology extended an earlier interest in the relationship between the constructed and its surroundings into another scale, shifting attention from the built environment toward the processes that shape the ground on which it rests.”

For the second chapter of Hors Les Murs by Selma Feriani, works by Tunisian artist Fares Thabet ( b.1982 ) are presented at The Clubhouse, bringing together works spanning 2023 to 2026.

Thabet's paintings capture landscapes of great complexity and paradoxical serenity. He explores perception and perspective to reveal compositions that introduce scenes of his strolls or of his imaginary pictorial universe. In his work, reality and fantasy intertwine through an intuitive and improvisational gaze, where the mundane and the fantastical merge in seamless dialogue.

Drawing from photographs, memory, and imagination, his compositions elude convention. His vocabulary of pigment and form allows for an expression of considerable freedom and fecundity, one that resists settled conventions of pictorial structuring while maintaining a fidelity to the rhythm of nature: its rising and cowering, its stillness and its flow.

Individual paintings bring together varied techniques and treatments, allowing different textures and painterly languages to occupy the same canvas. Semi-opacity, layering, density, and interruption create surfaces that resist a single mode of reading. Different forms of expression coexist without necessarily resolving into a uniform whole. Instead, they establish a delicate balance between control and spontaneity.

This presentation will be on view though March 2027

Dora Dalila Cheffi, Sing Finnish Karaoke with Mamou
Opening 18 September

For the upcoming edition of Basement Sessions, Tunisian-Finnish artist Dora Dalila Cheffi presents Sing Finnish Karaoke with Mamou, an interactive video installation inspired by the aesthetics of 1990s game shows and Finnish karaoke culture. With humour and playfulness, Cheffi explores immigration, adaptation and cultural belonging through her father’s journey from Tunisia to Finland in the 1990s. Featuring Tunisian performance artist Amenallah “Mamou” Atrous, the work invites visitors to become part of the experience, taking the microphone and singing along.

Produced by Breakfast Helsinki, filmed by Tuomas Nurmi, and designed by Ansku Heiskanen and Outi Kallio, with lighting by Valofirma

This video screening is part of a broader curatorial program developed by Selma Feriani Gallery, and dedicated to video practices and contemporary forms of storytelling.

Sebastián Espejo, Winged Stone
Opening 18 September

Chilean artist Sebastián Espejo (b. 1990) presents Winged Stone, a new body of work occupying the mezzanine floor of Selma Feriani Gallery. The exhibition brings together paintings that observe closely, mundane objects, exploring the ways familiar things can become subjects for observation and reflection.

Espejo’s work centres on the ephemerality of objects and the beauty of everyday life, reflecting on objecthood with recurring motifs including vases, fruit and cuttings. He approaches painting as a space for encounter, bringing references of historical artworks into dialogue with everyday objects and observed scenes. For the artist to paint, is a method of reflection and wandering. In his works, the poetics and beauty of domestic things are sought after. His layered compositions, often intimate in scale, brings the presence of everyday objects with fleeting references to the history of painting, opening a space in which the ordinary becomes a point of departure for reflection, memory and imagination. Through this interplay, Espejo invites us to reconsider the familiar and ultimately to see it anew.
