ALIEN Art

ALIEN Art’s perception for the aesthetic is woven with structure, geometry, minimalism, light, and life. Its identity is a door to the unknown, through which people connect and transform with existence and our life is provided with surprise and inner peace. phone home’ when the fingers are connected the magic moment happens, echoing its belief in the void where there is a force that leads everyone forward. Established in 2016, ALIEN Art elevates sense of space by integrating artistic experience into architecture. Projects carried out one after another embody contemporary issues found in grassroot movements and around the world. ALIEN Art collaborates with artists regardless of their nationality, aiming to make contemporary art accessible and present the poetic quality of life. Art platforms now operating include ALIEN Art Centre, SILKS CLUB and YUIMOM RESIDENCE, which explore the promise of contemporary art development in the city. ALIEN Art Centre

The construction of Kin-Ma Military Hostel, a historical landmark, commenced in 1959, one year following the August 23rd Artillery Battle, and was completed in 1967. The hostel used to be an intermediate stop and residency for the army. The word “Kin” and “Ma” represents the outlying islands Kinmen and Matsu, the front line between Taiwan and China during the Cold War. The boundary held the spirit similar to that of the Berlin Wall and the 38.5th Parallel Line that separates North and South Korea. What the hostel stood for was gradually forgotten by the world, as time went by and the political and economic situations changed. Following the end of the Cold War, in 1998 the Kaohsiung Kin-Ma Military Hostel was handed over to the Ministry of Transportation Railway Reconstruction Bureau, serving as the command center for the Kaohsiung railway underground construction project until the bureau’s relocation in 2012. In 2016 the Kaohsiung Urban Development Bureau solicited open bids; ALIEN Art Co. Ltd undertook the rights to preserve the property, conducting the restoration work and operation. Following two years of preparation and restoration, the Kin-Ma Military Hostel was reborn as the ALIEN Art Centre on November 28, 2018. The rigid layout of a military housing was transformed into a green building that is integrated into nature. On the perimeter are various geometric elements - dots, lines, and planes, stitching together stories from the past to present. The renovated hostel retains the strength of the early days, while incorporates the gracefulness of modern times. Today, ALIEN Art Centre brings together memory, art, trees and plants, architectural experience, and contemporary design. Sitting on the second floor of the Centre is ALIEN All-Day Lounge, which is a cozy place that feels beyond eternity, provides natural and organic delights and coffee, and with its surrounding infuses design and art, which allows visitors immerse themselves in the chill vibes as inspirations flow in.

A squirrel quietly passed along the museum pathway today.
Peeking out from the shadows of the trees, it moved swiftly across the grass.

On your next visit to ALIEN, take a moment to slow down.
Before stepping into the galleries, you may first encounter a little visitor.

Blooming, tilting, and unfolding

Like the gesture of a flower,
like a quiet sculpture.

(Sharon Wang)

The Dust and Gold Floral Art Workshop begins with the work of Shozo Michikawa. Through the curves and textures of flowers, together with the forms of vessels, new ways of seeing take shape within the space. During this experience, participants will engage through looking, touching, and creating, coming into close contact with the fleeting nature of beauty and how its traces may be preserved and coexist within the work. Softness and resilience, transience and permanence, will also resonate within the same space.

From the Figurative to the Abstract: What Do We See Through Children’s Eyes?

The birth of photography led people to reconsider: when the world can already be precisely recorded, how can creation continue to respond to reality?

In The Bards of Time and Space Family Workshop, children began with the works of Ho Kan and Soonik Kwon. Through the process of collecting visual clues, they learned to approach abstract painting through environment, character, and movement, further transforming these observations into images and imaginations of their own.

Where does abstraction begin?
Perhaps not from fully understanding an artwork, but from a childlike process of exploration — a willingness to respond to the world in one’s own way, through intuitive gestures within the image.

This also led us to understand, with renewed surprise, one of Picasso’s most well-known quotes:“It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child.”

Where Does Light Come From?

The light in Makoto Fujimura’s works seems to slowly emerge from deep within layers of color. On canvas or Kumohada paper, he repeatedly applies pigment, allows it to dry, and lets it seep into the surface, allowing pigment and water to settle naturally and form a soft yet profound sense of light.

Why does this kind of light take time?
It is not an effect created all at once, but something that slowly comes into being through waiting, drying, and the changing qualities of the materials themselves.

When we stand before the work, allowing our gaze to linger with the angle of viewing and the surrounding light, we begin to notice those subtle layers gradually revealing themselves.

When AI Begins to Keep Us Company, Does Love Begin to Form Through Response?

As AI moves from a tool into everyday conversation, companionship begins to take on new forms.

Artist begins with personal situations and subtle observations of everyday life. In Substitute Relationships — The Companionship of AI Lovers, she integrates interactive media with contemporary technology to ask: when emotional absence seems to be filled by a system, does companionship still come from a real relationship, or merely from the feeling of being continuously responded to?

We invite you to join the Image Sandbox Art Talk on 06.07 (Sun.), featuring guest moderator , Assistant Professor at Shu-Te University, and speaker , Associate Professor at National Sun Yat-sen University. Taking Substitute Relationships — The Companionship of AI Lovers as a starting point, the talk will explore AI companionship, emotional response, and the changing nature of contemporary intimacy.

Memories of the Volcano: Shozo Michikawa’s Volcano Series

In Shozo Michikawa’s Volcano Series,
rough surfaces, deep tones, and irregular forms
reveal traces shaped by the forces of nature.

Through wood firing, carbonization, and silver glaze,
the works develop a deep surface with subtle light.

As a child, Michikawa lived beneath a volcanic crater in Hokkaido,
an experience that later became an important source of inspiration.
