Pier-2’s resident artists continue developing their own creative practices during their residency, while also embracing an interactive learning approach centered on experiential construction and shared participation. Through this spirit, we hope to bring art into everyday life in a more approachable and natural way. When art education enters the classroom, and artists’ creative thinking is transformed into new learning experiences, could art become something truly fun and exciting?
Today, our residency manager brought resident artist Sakurako Nagano (anno lab) to Yancheng Elementary School third grade classes for a workshop titled “Let’s Make Animation Together.” It was a joyful and inspiring creative experience for the children.
At the beginning of the class, Sakurako showed the students how to fold an A4 sheet of paper and flip it quickly, allowing images to appear to move through persistence of vision. This helped the children understand the basic principle of animation.
Next, the students used KOMA KOMA to create stop-motion animation. Developed in 2010 by Japanese animation artist and researcher Taro Tsutayama, the software was designed to connect animation with education. Its interface is simple, intuitive, and perfect for young learners.
Pencils, erasers, toys, and everyday objects became the stars of their own animated scenes. Frame by frame, the children carefully moved each object and took photos. When they played back their creations and saw their animations come to life, the classroom immediately filled with surprise, laughter, and excitement.
Throughout the workshop, every child was fully engaged and having fun. Sakurako also shared, “The most important thing is that children enjoy themselves.” In many ways, joy and wholehearted participation may be the purest beginning of creativity.
Everyone is also welcome to try KOMA KOMA and make your own animations too!!
