For Wang Guan-Jhen, reading is an ongoing experience of time. Unfinished pages, improvised bookmarks, and interrupted reading journeys become ways of understanding memory and temporality. Presented as traditional hanging scrolls, the works unfold like bookmarks of time, carrying traces of memory, emotion, and unresolved thoughts, awaiting future moments of return and rediscovery.

As an important platform dedicated to fostering contemporary art exchanges between Taiwan and Indonesia, YIRI ARTS Jakarta is committed to cultivating dialogues that transcend geographical and cultural boundaries.

This two-person exhibition brings together Taiwanese artist Wang Guan-Jhen and Indonesian artist Hudan Seltan, presenting two distinct artistic approaches that explore the complexities of everyday experience, temporal perception, and individual existence.

-

Hudan Seltan (b. 2000, Bukittinggi, Indonesia) is an artist whose practice centers on memory, daily life, and the inherent absurdities of human relationships.

His work begins with an ongoing process of observation and collection. Drawing from internet imagery, photographic references, everyday objects, and personal memories, Seltan extracts visual fragments that are subsequently collaged, reassembled, and reconfigured into scenes that oscillate between the familiar and the unfamiliar. These compositions often evoke a subtle sense of contradiction: viewers may recognize the objects and situations depicted, yet find them resistant to assimilation into their established understanding of reality.

For Seltan, everyday life is never a stable or transparent condition, but rather a constantly shifting terrain shaped by flows of information, social pressures, and personal emotions. Seemingly ordinary objects, bodily gestures, and mundane episodes are detached from their original contexts and transformed into visual elements charged with psychological undertones and emotional tension. Through displaced imagery, distorted proportions, reconstructed spatial relationships, and layered narrative cues, he examines how contemporary individuals navigate their sense of self amid information overload and pervasive anxieties.

At the same time, Seltan’s paintings maintain a deliberate distance from their subjects. Rather than depicting specific events or constructing explicit narratives, he positions viewers somewhere between participation and observation, as if peering through a narrow opening into a scene that feels both familiar and elusive. The absurdity and humor embedded within his works do not function as an escape from reality, but rather as alternative means of understanding it. Through these carefully orchestrated yet seemingly disjointed visual arrangements, Seltan continues to investigate how feelings of loneliness, intimacy, anxiety, and alienation are shaped, projected, and perceived within contemporary life.

Huang Tzu-Yu : Ms. Potato in B1

For Huang Tzu-Yu, houses are never merely houses.

In her Monopoly series, the artist transforms buildings and everyday urban scenes encountered during her wanderings into portrait-like paintings. Spaces that cannot truly be possessed are instead collected and preserved within the image, becoming vessels of memory and perception.

The Elephant Dancing Apartment is one of the artist’s rare fictional works. Inspired by cinematic imagery and observations from daily life, a pink apartment building becomes a stage for countless unseen stories. Here, reality and imagination converge, reflecting contemporary desires for dwelling, belonging, and the spaces we call our own.

For Huang Tzu-Yu, painting is a form of gentle collecting. In an era where looking often replaces owning, these ordinary and overlooked landscapes become intimate portraits of everyday life.

Whispers from the Collection Vault

Collection and research form the classical foundations of the museum institution. Through the research and display of collections, art museums play a crucial role within the art ecology in preserving and constructing ”artistic canons.“ Concurrently, through exhibitions and educational outreach, they shoulder the mission of promoting public learning and cultural dissemination. As the first modern art museum in southern Taiwan, the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts (hereafter referred to as KMFA) has consistently promoted artistic exchange both domestically and internationally since its establishment in 1994.

By focusing on and presenting the artistic landscape of southern Taiwan, and through long-term, systematic research into its collections and exhibitions, KMFA has shaped an art-historical and cultural genealogy unique to the ”Greater South,“ amplifying its voice to a broader audience.

Entanglements: The Rhythm of Being

Entanglements: The Rhythm of Being conceptually echoes a phenomenon revealed by modern physics: At the quantum level, indivisible connections occur between certain particles. Such a perspective reminds us that existence may not be exclusively composed of mutually discrete individuals, but is more like a relational whole in which myriads of things interconnect, interact and give birth to one another.

Informed by the concepts of contemporary museum studies, the exhibition features 11 art projects by contemporary artists and collectives. Here, they explore how advances in technology have caused overlaps among the past, present, and future within the conventional linear view of time, and they ponder how humans understand their relationships with other species, the environment, and the world. It also examines three dimensions: how humans and non-humans collectively interpret the world, how technology augments humanity’s senses and perceptions of time and space, and how we may become “symbiotic agents.”

In this way, we may perceive the Umwelten of other species (how they subjectively perceive their environments), which were originally beyond our reach. This process of choice and intervention that breaks the linear progression of time challenges us to rethink our ethical responsibilities. The exhibition venue is designed as a space for visitor perception and practice, facilitating resonance and empathy that foster new ethics and values of sharing, mutual aid, and symbiosis.

The visual language of the works oscillates between the play of light on figures, everyday objects, and abstract textures. The accumulated layers of flattened pigment on the canvas surface, the intentional gaps left between panels - these interact and resonate within the assembled structure, summoning a sense of time and weight far greater than the frames themselves.

Huang Tzu-Yu : Ms. Potato in B1

In Ms. Potato in B1, Huang Tzu-Yu draws from her experience moving between the roles of artist and gallery administrator, using the fictional figure of “Ms. Potato” to reflect on artistic labor, emotional exhaustion, and the often-unseen people behind exhibitions.

The exhibition unfolds like a scene that has yet to fully begin: the gallery staff have arrived, the installation team is ready, even the artwork transporter is here — yet “Ms. Potato” herself is still on the way. Blurring the boundaries between fiction and reality, Huang gently captures the cycles of depletion and regeneration embedded within contemporary creative life.

More than a personal statement, Ms. Potato in B1 feels like a quietly humorous love letter to art workers and exhausted souls alike.

Set within a contemporary condition defined by flux and instability, the exhibition seeks to establish a point of orientation between shifting memory and perception. Presented as constellations of works, the paintings unfold across the wall like fragments of memory, forming a spatialized, almost theatrical field that extends beyond the singular image.

Taking “potato” as its central metaphor, the exhibition reflects the artist’s shifting condition between labor and artistic production, marking a significant development within her recent practice.

Yuan Hsin-Yuan : Two Trees and a Flock of Birds

Working primarily with camphor and birch wood, Yuan Hsin-Yuan transforms fleeting observations from daily life into restrained sculptural figures. Drawn from sketches of gestures, postures, and passing encounters, her works strip away overt narrative and expression, leaving behind contemplative forms that evoke states of solitude, memory, and emotional ambiguity.

Mai Yokoyama : Solar Phantasm

Centered on the question of authenticity and perception, Yokoyama’s practice examines the shifting relationship between digital image-making, painting, and time. Through works that move between iPad drawings, watercolor studies, and oil painting, the artist constructs layered visual structures in which images continuously evolve through accumulation, transformation, and residue.
