once remarked, “This is a pluralistic world. I do not belong to any particular school. Since you cannot define my work, perhaps we may simply call it ‘pluralism’ — or even ‘non-ism.’”

For Art Taichung 2026, Asia Art Center presents a selection of key works from across Li Chen’s career at Booth D02, including the weighty yet ethereal ink-black sculptures of the Spiritual Journey through the Great Ether and The Beacon series, the Ordinary People series, which reflects on human nature and the essence of life, Spiritual Journey through the Mundane World, and the Ethereal Cloud series, which evokes a distinctly Eastern abstract sensibility. Together, these works offer a concise introduction to Li Chen’s artistic trajectory and invite a meaningful dialogue between the internationally acclaimed artist and his hometown.

Asia Art Center is honored to present a focused solo exhibition by internationally acclaimed contemporary sculptor Li Chen at Booth D02 during Art Taichung 2026. Li Chen became the first artist from the Chinese-speaking world invited to present a solo exhibition at the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007. In 2013, at age 50, he staged a major solo exhibition at Place Vendôme in Paris, becoming the youngest sculptor ever to exhibit there. In 2024, he received the American Friends of Museums in Israel’s Outstanding Achievements in the Sculptural Arts Award. His work Pure Land (1998) was recently acquired by the Musée Cernuschi in Paris, and in 2025, a major monograph on his work was published by renowned European art publisher Éditions Cercle d'Art.

Both classical and contemporary, Li Chen’s sculptures present a richly layered artistic language that resists singular categorization. In the Discovery documentary Chineseness (2013), Western scholars observed that Li Chen’s work resists categorization, instead emerging naturally through the intersection of different ideas and forms, allowing audiences from diverse cultural backgrounds to find resonance and connection within it. This presentation marks the first time that selected works by the Taichung-born artist are being exhibited in dialogue with audiences in his hometown.

📢 PUBLICATION

’s collaboration with began through a gradual process of mutual understanding and organic development. Over the years, we have continued to follow his practice and the way he has steadily built a distinct painterly language within the world of sport and competition. ‘Cramps’ marks his first solo exhibition at Asia Art Center, as well as a significant moment in his artistic trajectory. Over the past decade, his work has turned increasingly inward, transforming outward scenes of movement into a deeper inquiry into bodily perception and the experience of time.

While sport, running, and competition have remained central to Kuo’s practice in recent years, this exhibition marks a more inward turn. The paintings do not simply focus on figures in motion, but return to the body itself: the weight it bears, its inner rhythms, and the ways it adjusts within a fast-moving environment. This process of internalization reflects not only the accumulation of artistic method, but also a growing maturity of mind.

In addition to the exhibited works and installation views, this publication also includes an essay by writer Tsai Shih-ping, Commissioner of Taipei’s Department of Cultural Affairs, as well as Kuo’s own writing and images from everyday life, allowing readers to enter his practice from multiple perspectives and to sense an extended layering of time. Through these materials, we may come closer to the feeling that repeatedly emerges between running and pause, and begin to understand how, through sport, he searches for a way to remain in dialogue with himself.

Though Li Chen: Spiritual Journey through the Great Ether at the Guangdong Museum of Art has concluded, Asia Art Center shares selected reflections from two important symposiums, highlighting scholars’ observations on the spirit of ’s practice.

noted that Li Chen represents a breakthrough within contemporary sculpture, neither remaining within the conventions of traditional statuary nor simply adopting Western modernist sculptural systems. Instead, he has forged a distinct Eastern methodology and a highly recognizable artistic language capable of moving fluidly across cultural frameworks.

observed that, as an artist from Taiwan, Li Chen is deeply rooted in Eastern thought yet never constrained by geography, paradigms, or tradition. Drawing from Zen stillness and Daoist freedom, his sculptures are not concerned with surface representation, but with spiritual resonance and inner vitality. Beneath their solemn black forms lies subtle humor, humanity, and an unexpected warmth.

added that Li Chen’s work is closely tied to the Eastern aesthetic tradition of contemplative wandering and Zhuangzi’s philosophy of spiritual roaming. Through sculpture, he transforms concepts such as qi, emptiness, and inner nature into perceptible spiritual fields, establishing a strong Eastern cultural subjectivity within contemporary sculpture.

From millennial tradition to contemporary sculpture, Li Chen’s practice moves between the classical and the contemporary, between a New Eastern spirit and the international art discourse.

French correspondent and author Dimitri Bruyas remarked during the talk: “ is considered a contemporary artist because he has not lost his culture, while at the same time seeking to transform traditional culture.”

Li Chen, in turn, posed another thought-provoking question: “Do we truly understand Western art, or have we simply seen too little of it? Absurdity lies hidden within the soil of one’s own classical culture—something easily overlooked in everyday life, and therefore a source of lost confidence.”

Perhaps this is precisely why Li Chen’s work is neither simply Eastern sculpture nor a blind pursuit of Western contemporary art. Instead, it forms its own language through interpretation, questioning, and transformation. This refusal to be easily categorised is also what allows audiences from different cultural backgrounds to find resonance in his work.

Sharing highlights from From Tradition to Contemporary Sculpture: A Conversation with Li Chen — an invitation to return to the dialogue and reconsider: can contemporary art also grow from the cultural soil of our own traditions?

From millennial tradition to contemporary sculpture, Li Chen’s practice moves constantly between spirituality and physical form, the classical and the contemporary, Eastern sculpture and an international artistic context.

As once remarked: “This is a pluralistic world. Since you cannot define my work, then perhaps we may simply call it ‘pluralism’ — or even ‘non-ism.’”

In the Discovery documentary Chineseness, Western scholars observed that Li Chen’s work resists categorisation, instead emerging naturally through the intersection of different ideas and forms — allowing audiences from diverse cultural backgrounds to find resonance and connection within it.

Chen Kuang-Yi, Director of National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts: “Li Chen is an artist who hopes his works can speak for themselves… Why is he able to move so freely between tradition and the contemporary, between East and West? Because he possesses something stronger than most — a profound sense of freedom.”

The short film features highlights from From Tradition to Contemporary Sculpture: A Conversation with Li Chen — returning to the artist’s own voice, and reflecting on how his sculpture moves from the classical toward the contemporary and the global stage.

的矛盾平衡;

From Tradition to Contemporary Sculpture: A Conversation with Li Chen

“My artistic journey is at once absurd and extraordinary.
From a millennial classical tradition, a counter-response emerges—forming an alternative balance of contradictions.
This ‘creative ambiguity’ is a disturbance of human nature, a process of understanding, a felicitous misreading—
through which the spirit and energy of Eastern sculpture come vividly to life within contemporary art.”

— Li Chen, 24 April 2026, prior to the talk

“From Tradition to Contemporary Sculpture: A Conversation with Li Chen” offered a focused look into the logic behind ’s practice.

Rooted in millennial tradition yet never confined by it, his work moves between tradition and the contemporary—what he calls “creative ambiguity.”

Resisting easy categorisation, Li Chen’s sculptures carry traces of , , , , and figuration, while forming what he describes as a kind of “ .”

Through Eastern sensibilities, spirituality, and cultural memory, Li Chen has developed a distinctive sculptural language that resonates across cultures and continues to gain international recognition.

Our sincere thanks to Li Chen; Director Chen Kuang-Yi of the ; Dimitri Bruyas, correspondent, producer, and author; and Yan Xiao-Xiao, Editor-in-Chief of ARTCO & ARTouch, for their insightful contributions. Thank you to everyone who joined us.
