A little tidbit about the Civil War: Benjamin Harrison was the commanding officer of the 70th Indiana Infantry, ranking as their colonel. A private serving in his unit, later rising through the ranks to end the war as a Major, was William McKinley. Both later became presidents of this country.

On occasion, the new recruits receive some basic training at the Fort. Here, a fine Union Army soldier is working with the recruits on the manual of arms. We're open every day from 9 am to 5 pm!

We also had Candace Simar and her husband Keith with us yesterday. She has a new book about Montana now available! She'll be back later this year. Alan Quade will also be back with to demonstrate blacksmithing later this year.

Hey Folks! It's the first day of the 2026 season at Fort Abercrombie! Come on out and visit anytime between 9 am to 5 pm, any day through Labor Day.

The first photos are of the flag raising ceremony and the 5th Minnesota, acting as the 1861 Regular Army stationed at the Fort just as the Civil War is starting. The other photos are of the unit engaging with the public this morning.

We are hiring a maintenance worker at Fort Abercrombie State Historic Site . 16 hours per week May 23- September 7. $18 per hour. Flexible schedule- Apply at link below. Must be 18 years old and willing to work outdoors trimming,painting and general maintenance. Position opening closes May 12.

Well. folks, the end is near...the vegetation on the Minnesota side of the river is changing color...it's beginning to turn a little cooler...and today is the last day of the Fort's season. We had a good year overall. The staff wishes to thank the people who have been out to see us and take our tours. We also thank our site interpreters who left early for the classroom: Alexa, to teach in the West Fargo system; Lis, off to pursue a doctorate; and Emma, who is beginning her college adventure. Good luck to them!

We're open today until 5, so you do have one last chance to see us!
