Eisenhower Foundation

Eisenhower Foundation The Eisenhower Foundation's mission is to champion the life and enduring legacy of Dwight D. Eisenhower to inspire leadership, character, and service.

The Eisenhower Foundation was formed in 1945 after the Allied victory of World War II to create a memorial to General Eisenhower. The Boyhood Home was opened in 1947 and the Museum in 1954 by the Foundation. Public and private entities raised $3.5 million to build the Library which opened in 1962. Today, five buildings on 22 acres comprise the Eisenhower Presidential Center - the Library, Museum, Boyhood Home, Visitors Center and Place of Meditation.

Arthur F. Gorham was a highly respected U.S. Army paratrooper and West Point graduate who became one of the original commanders of the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment in the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II.

Known for his fearless leadership and willingness to test dangerous jumps himself before asking his men to do them, he helped pioneer early airborne operations and specialized training, including experimental ski-paratrooper missions.

Gorham was killed in action during the Allied invasion of Sicily in July 1943 after personally fighting German tanks, and he was posthumously awarded two Distinguished Service Crosses for extraordinary heroism.

After receiving his Naval training at Great Lakes, Illinois, Rex Van Scoyoc served in several locations domestically before being deployed to North Africa aboard the USS LST-350.

He served on board the tank landing ship for the entirety of the ship’s active World War II service. The ship was assigned to the Europe-Africa-Middle East theater and participated in the invasion of Normandy in June 1944, transporting Company “B” 48th Armored Medical Battalion from England.
