At the age of 22, Kenneth Rupe enlisted in the U.S. Army after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. His skill in stenography led him to serve with the 300th General Hospital, supporting a team of doctors and nurses from Vanderbilt University Medical School. During the war, he crossed the Atlantic aboard the Thomas H. Barry, narrowly missing a German torpedo, before landing in North Africa with the Salerno invasion force and eventually serving in Naples, Italy, where he even witnessed the dramatic 1944 eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. Rupe returned home in November 1945 as a Master Sergeant after more than three years of service, later earning a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Reserves.

Vernon Noel was born on a farm 7 miles north of Abilene, Kansas — where General Dwight D. Eisenhower was from. Vernon went on to enlist in the Army Air Corps, and he entered the service in March of 1943. He trained at the St. Louis School of Aeronautics in the Airplane Engine and Maintainer program. Soon after, he served overseas; Noel took his aeronautical expertise to Europe, where he served as an airplane inspector during the war.

William “Bill” Fry dreamed of becoming a pilot and joined the Army Air Corps in 1942, eventually flying B-17 bombers from England and completing 24 missions. On his final mission over Berlin in February 1945, enemy artillery disabled three engines, forcing Fry to make a daring flight to Sweden, where he skillfully landed the crippled bomber on a too-short airstrip and saved his entire crew before they were taken prisoner and interned for several weeks. After returning home to Kansas and receiving an honorable discharge, Fry remained a lifelong pilot and dedicated his life to teaching others to fly.
