William King Museum of Art

William King Museum of Art WKMA features galleries showcasing art of the region and of the world, both contemporary and historic.

The William King Museum of Art is a non-profit regional art museum and arts education center housed in a historic 1913 former school. It is the only facility of its kind and Virginia’s only nationally accredited museum west of Roanoke. An average of nine exhibitions are mounted each year, showcasing art of the region and of the world. Programming includes artist talks, lectures, workshops, and oth

er special events. Two additional galleries include the Student Gallery, which displays works from area schools and colleges, and the Panoramic Gallery that features self-curated shows by local artists. These two galleries offer up to 24 additional exhibits a year. An extensive arts education program serves school and public audiences both within and outside of the facility. The Museum also features artist studios, reference library, research archives, and an outdoor sculpture garden.

Ray Byram’s exhibition “Light and Sanctity” is currently on display in our Panoramic Gallery. Byram’s gorgeous landscapes line our walls and emit feelings of peace and serenity like taking a quiet walk through nature.
The pictures don’t do Byram’s work justice, so be sure to stop by and see them before August 16th!

Our O. Winston Link exhibit at the Creeper Trail Welcome Center in Abingdon is back up! American photographer O. Winston Link captured the last days of the steam locomotive on the Norfolk and Western in the late 1950s. His incredible work documents some of our region's cultural heritage and will be available to view at the Findlay House during its regular operating hours as we celebrate the origin of the Virginia Creeper Trail.

We’re less than two weeks away from the start of our summer camps and we’re so excited! This year’s camps have so much to offer, but one that I want to highlight this week is the Alternative Process Photography teen camp 📸

This camp is taught by the incredibly talented Morgan Ford. Morgan has a strong background in photography and has had exhibits all over the country featuring her work. This week of camp gives students the opportunity to learn darkroom etiquette and safety and explore a variety of imaging techniques. Students will also have the chance to work with digital photography via portraits, photo scavenger hunt and/or photo collage outside of the darkroom.
This camp is perfect for teens who are interested in photography and learning more about the craft!

The time has come, we’re going on a WOLF HUNT! 🐺

The Abingdon Wolf Project is here, with a new pack of wolves designed and painted by a group of very talented local and regional artists.

This year’s project also offers an interactive experience, with a special digital scavenger hunt! Each stop has special content, artist insights, design inspiration, and behind-the-scenes stories. You also get points for visiting each location that will give you the chance to win a poster and a one-year membership to WKMA!

You can learn more and sign up for the hunt by visiting https://go.visitabingdonvirginia.com/checkout/968/visit-abingdon-virginia/4612/visit-abingdon-virginia-experiences

Following the public exhibition, the wolves will be auctioned at the Mistletoe Market Gala on November 7th, with proceeds benefiting the William King Museum of Art and supporting the artists who brought each sculpture to life.

Made possible through a collaboration between the Town of Abingdon, Virginia and the William King Museum of Art, the Abingdon Wolf Project highlights the power of partnerships in bringing dynamic cultural experiences to life.
