William King Museum of Art WKMA features galleries showcasing art of the region and of the world, both contemporary and historic.

The William King Museum of Art is a non-profit regional art museum and arts education center housed in a historic 1913 former school. It is the only facility of its kind and Virginia’s only nationally accredited museum west of Roanoke. An average of nine exhibitions are mounted each year, showcasing art of the region and of the world. Programming includes artist talks, lectures, workshops, and oth

er special events. Two additional galleries include the Student Gallery, which displays works from area schools and colleges, and the Panoramic Gallery that features self-curated shows by local artists. These two galleries offer up to 24 additional exhibits a year. An extensive arts education program serves school and public audiences both within and outside of the facility. The Museum also features artist studios, reference library, research archives, and an outdoor sculpture garden.

You all have been busy completing the Abingdon Wolf Project Scavenger Hunt and we LOVE to see it! This week’s wolf highlight is the gorgeous “Appalachian Skies” wolf! The depiction of the night sky is done beautifully.

We’re in the middle of summer camp and we’re having so much fun! If you’re still looking for something to do this summer we’ve still got space in a couple of our summer camps. Our Appalachia Youth Camp is still open and our Wildlife and Nature Art Camp for Teens is still open. These camps are perfect for the nature loving kid or teen!

We’ve got a fun class with Morgan Ford coming up on June 20th from 11-2pm!
Come learn one of the oldest photographic techniques, cyanotypes. These gorgeous prints involve coating paper with a light-sensitive emulsion and laying objects or transparencies on the paper, then exposing them using the sun. After a water rinse, cyanotypes develop into a deep blue and white print.

We’ve got another exhibit up at the Visitor’s Center!
“Through The Lens of Color” comes to you from a Plein Air watercolor and gouache painting class that was hosted at the Art Lab here at WKMA. The class took place weekly from April 9th-30th at Art Lab and various other locations throughout Abingdon.
This class was made possible through a generous grant from the Town of Abingdon. We hope you’ll stop by and see these gorgeous pieces!

We know you’ve been waiting for it, here’s our June construction update!

“As summer approaches, the new Worrell Wing is receiving its final touches. Work on the exterior is almost finished, so the interior is now the focus of much activity. Our trustee board was treated to a recent first-time exciting look inside! The surrounding parking areas are also being completed, and work is beginning on the outside garden and terrace area at its entrance.
Please continue to use the Russell Road entrance, as the Main Street access road remains a construction site. We are open as always and eager to see you here!”
