New England’s Scenic Train Rides road trip takes you to nine rail trips that show off some of the region’s best views. It starts in Hancock, Maine, on the Downeast Scenic Railroad, where old rail cars pass through thick woods and over long wooden trestles. From there, head to Unity to ride the Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railroad, known for quiet farmland scenes and small towns. In New Hampshire, the Conway Scenic Railroad rolls into the White Mountains, followed by the Mount Washington Cog Railway, which climbs to the highest peak in the Northeast. In Vermont, the Green Mountain Railroad passes covered bridges and wide mountain views. Back in New Hampshire, the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad runs right along the lake. In Massachusetts, the Cape Cod Central Railroad moves through cranberry bogs and marsh. In Connecticut, the Essex Steam Train & Riverboat pairs a train ride with a river cruise. The trip ends in the Berkshires on the Berkshire Scenic Railway.

We continue to be grateful to the Berkshire Eagle for their coverage of the organization’s reinvention. Melanie’s words say it all:

“BSRM is more than a train ride. It represents the wonder of a technology that propelled our nation forward at an unprecedented pace. The railroad was transformative—not only for those who experienced it directly, but for the communities it shaped and helped create.”

For the first time, the Berkshire Scenic Railway Museum has a paid executive director as the non-profit explores enhancing its role in the hospitality economy.

A NEW CHAPTER BEGINS

We’re thrilled to announce the appointment of Melanie Seiden as the first Executive Director of Berkshire Scenic Railway Museum (BSRM)—a major milestone and the museum’s first paid staff position, reflecting our growth and long-term vision.

This step follows a strategic assessment that confirmed BSRM’s potential to grow as a cultural destination, educational resource, and economic driver in the Berkshires. With more than 10,000 riders annually on the Hoosac Valley Train Ride in Adams, MA, the museum is well positioned for its next chapter.

Melanie brings strong leadership experience and a deep commitment to community engagement. Most recently, she served as Associate Director for Membership at the New York State Council of School Superintendents, where she led outreach, strategy, and relationship building across a statewide network. Her energy, collaborative approach, and vision stood out to the selection committee.

As Executive Director, Melanie will work closely with the Board, volunteers, and community partners to strengthen the organization, expand programming, and advance BSRM’s mission of connecting the region’s railroad history to today.

Please join us in welcoming Melanie Seiden to BSRM—we’re excited for what’s ahead.
