USS Hornet - Sea, Air and Space Museum The USS Hornet Museum preserves and honors the legacy of the aircraft carrier USS Hornet CV-12. The ship's active duty years spanned the 1940's - 60's.
(3009)

The USS Hornet spent almost three decades traveling the world's oceans in service to our nation. The USS Hornet Museum, a State and National Historic Landmark, is berthed at Pier 3 on the former naval air station in Alameda. The historic aircraft carrier was a key participant in WWII, the Vietnam War, the Cold War and the recovery of the first two lunar landing space missions - Apollo 11 and 12. S

he was stored in a naval mothball fleet from 1970-1995. When the Museum opened in 1998, it was the only sea, air and space museum on the West Coast. The Museum is onboard the USS Hornet Aircraft Carrier. Providing exhibitions on the history of the USS Hornet as well as it's sister essex class carriers, history of women's role in the Navy, history of the first flight and landing off a aircraft carrier and so much more. The Ship provides three decks for exploring as well as an opportunity to see the control tower from the inside. The Museum is a great resource for local and international visitors. Newport News Shipbuilding launched Hornet (CV 12) on Aug. 30, 1943. Built to support the U.S. Navy effort during World War II, the Essex-class aircraft carrier was the eighth ship to carry the name Hornet. Commissioned later that year, Hornet became a key player in the Pacific during the war. The sh...

Remembering Vergil E. “Verg” Bloomquist, who served as an Aviation Radioman with Torpedo Squadron 11 (VT-11) aboard USS Hornet (CV-12) during World War II. ⚓️

Before his passing, Verg generously donated photographs taken with his K-20 aerial camera, along with memorabilia from his wartime service, to the USS Hornet Museum. Today, these artifacts are displayed on the 2nd Deck in our Air Group 11 exhibit, helping tell the story of VT-11 and the young men who flew into combat over the Pacific.

We also want to remember and thank Verg’s beloved wife, Mary Ellen “Mert” Bloomquist, who passed away earlier this year. Verg and Mert first met as teenagers and stayed connected through letters before marrying in 1945, following his return from combat. They shared 76 years of marriage until Verg’s passing in 2022.

Verg’s remarkable story has also been preserved in the following media:

We’re grateful to the entire Bloomquist family, for helping preserve this history for future generations. Their support has helped keep Verg’s story, and the history and service of those who served aboard USS Hornet, alive for future generations.
