Patch, an inside row jumper, is a “stargazer” – a carousel animal that is looking upward toward the sky. He is so excited to be galloping around the carousel that his mouth is wide open as if to say, “Let’s go!”

When the Berrys bought property on the South Santiam River it was covered in blackberries and wild strawberries. Between that and their last name of Berry the name “Patch”, for Berry Patch, was a natural choice.

Patch wears a simple brown English-style saddle with blueberries and strawberries around and behind the back of the saddle. More berries are on his chest band and a small bouquet of berries is attached to his bridle.

His blue saddle blanket, trimmed with gold tassels, sets off his shiny black coat. Bob and Mary were avid rock hounds and one of Bob’s carved stones, a cabochon, is on Patch’s breastplate.

Kiwi is a fancy circus horse performing for us on the outside row of the Carousel. This beautiful animal was already being carved, but in need of a sponsor, when it caught Mr. Sykes’ eye.

“Kiwi” is named in honor of Sykes’ granddaughter Kiyona Madsen, whose nickname is Kiwi. Kiwi chose the colors that make this horse bright and cheerful.

The Sykes’ wished to leave Kiwi a legacy by which to remember them in the years to come. Therefore Kiwi is personalized with a small dog tucked behind the saddle that sports a clown-style collar and holding a pair of ballet shoes.

There is also a white Cockatoo on his chest plate. The name “Kiwi” is carved into the bridle cheek strap on the outside of the horse and Kiyona’s birth date is on the other side.

From start to finish, it can take nearly a decade for a new animal to make its way onto the carousel.

We are so thankful for Jack and his dedicated team of volunteer carvers. The time, patience, and care they put into each animal shows just how much they love our community.

Every carved animal started with someone willing to serve.

Help us thank Jack and our amazing volunteer carvers! Leave them a message in the comments. ❤️
