The Monroe County Historical Society was formed in 1959 when a passionate group of people discussed the importance of preserving our country history. They not only maintain our Historical Museum, the Kendall Place, Buxton - a once thriving coal mining town but are also home to the Genealogy group. There are many other historic exhibits showing the many changes our county has seen!

Our thoughts and prayers to Linda Hoskins, one of board members!

Steven Lee Hoskins, 74, of Albia, Iowa, was welcomed into Heaven on October 21, 2026, after a brave and humble journey with pulmonary (lung) fibrosis.

Steve was born on October 14, 1952, in Brookfield, Missouri, the son of Kenneth James and Betty Lou Hoskins. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Linda Hoskins (Buckingham); his five children, Matt (Amber) Hoskins of Story City, IA; Stacey (Rob) Scott of Oskaloosa, IA; Erin (Marc) Morhack of Eden Prairie, MN; Tim (Kate) Hoskins of West Des Moines, IA; and Ben (Josh Dahle) Hoskins of Des Moines, IA; and nine grandchildren; Jenna, Aden (Josie), Nolan, Isabel, Lynden, Maryn, Ella, Eva, Catelyn.

After graduating from Linn County R-1 High School, Steve served in the U.S. Army for three years, stationed in Germany. Upon returning, he began his 35-year career in engineering and purchasing at John Deere in Ottumwa, retiring in 2009.

Steve lived his life with a heart centered on God, family, and a commitment to putting others first. Each day, he shared his love through big and small acts of service for his family, friends, and anyone in need. He was a man of many talents: a builder, woodworker, singer, athlete, coach, golfer, fisherman, hunter, lifelong learner, and all-around go-to guy. His passion for St. Mary’s Catholic Church led him to serve in numerous volunteer roles, including lector, cantor, Eucharistic minister, parish council member, finance committee member, trustee, and maintenance volunteer.

Above all, he treasured being a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His quiet generosity, endless kindness, and steady guidance will be deeply missed but forever remembered.

He is survived by his siblings, Phillip (Terri) Hoskins, John (Conny) Hoskins, Kevin (Kathleen) Hoskins, Shari Hoskins, Lori (Donald) Cordonnier, Kathi (Danny) Tolly, Lisa (David) Burr, Tony (Lisa) Hoskins, and Mary Beth (Jeff) Parks; his sister-in-law, Nancy Hoskins; his mother-in-law, Mary Buckingham; and numerous extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his twin daughters, Stephanie and Jennifer Hoskins; his father-in-law, Jack Buckingham; his parents, Kenneth and Betty Hoskins; his sister, Theresa Williams; his brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Sandra Hoskins; and his brother, Kerry Hoskins.

Visitation will be held Thursday, October 29, 2026, from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with a Christian wake service at 7:45 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 30, 2026, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Albia, with Father Isaac Essel and Father Michael Volkmer, C.PP.S. concelebrants. Interesting morning! I was just confronted in the alley by a man with a back telling me I have been thowing away items from the museum in the dumpster. We don't throw anything away unless it is broken. We do not use a dumpster! When I told him that he got violent and started shouting and wanted me to punch him! I don't know who he is , but watch yourselves around town
