Our Story

Thesaurus Studio/Gallery is Michael Thornton's studio workshop and display gallery. Visitors are welcome, by appointment. Michael Ray Thornton is a master potter whose work expresses his affinity with Oriental pottery traditions and aesthetics. He has studied ceramics with masters of the art for over 40 years in America and Japan. From the painstaking craftsmanship demanded by the Arita porcelain technique, to the wabi-sabi aesthetic of stoneware tea ceremony vessels, Michael finds a well of knowledge and inspiration in the various ceramic traditions of Japan, China and Korea. He draws from these traditions liberally as he expresses his own creative vision in clay. “The seductive depth of a classic celadon glaze inspires me to plumb the depths of science and art to produce a worthy tribute to the beauty of all those who have gone before.” As Artist in Residence in Takeo City, Japan, Michael spent four months teaching and learning about ceramics - deepening his appreciation for the culture and its ceramic legacy. Michael's artwork is in public and private collections in many countries. His ceramic work is represented by Weyrich Gallery, Albuquerque.
