cated near the corner of Central Avenue and Morningside close to other locally-owned galleries, antique stores and restaurants. Albuquerque's Central Avenue was once the business district of the highway Route 66 as it ran from Chicago to Los Angeles. As motorists passed through Tijeras Canyon east of the city, the first thing they would see, off in the distance, would be the beckoning neon light of the Nob Hill business district, that once marked to easternmost edge of the city of Albuquerque. Nob Hill spans a mile-long stretch of Central Avenue, defined at each end by sculptural neon arches stretching over the street. Within this trendy enclave visitors will find an eclectic mix of boutiques and shops, galleries and theaters, brewpubs and restaurants, all anchored by the historic Nob Hill Shopping Center, which was designed by the architect Louis Hesselden. The center, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, features moderne design elements and is considered one of the best remaining examples of a 1940's automobile-oriented shopping center in America. The 1950s are considered the heyday of the district, and it was known for the signature style of commercial neon lighting. Presently, there is a resurgence of interest in the vintage neon look and many of the original signs have been preserved or restored.
