BETTY COOK IN KAAMA

Last month, we featured the iconic race boat KAAMA with legendary boat racer Betty Cook, who pioneered the path for females in the great sport of offshore powerboat racing. The boat has been meticulously restored to its former glory by Thomas and Libby Jewsbury and was one of the many highlights at the 2024 1000 Islands Charity Poker Run in Clayton, NY.

This amazing piece of racing history is now available to a new home. Contact Jeremy Cohen at Seabound Yachts for more information.

The caption reads:

Arguably the most historical boat to attend the run was Thomas Jewsbury’s KAAMA (above), a 38’ Scarab built by Larry Smith in 1979 and raced by the late, legendary offshore pilot Betty Cook (left), who chalked up World and National Championships in it. When Jewsbury and his wife, Libby, acquired it in 2009, it was a bare hull accompanied by “a bunch of crates filled with parts,” he recalls—no motor, just the drives, mounts and a lot of rigging. After languishing in various shops (and the Jewsbury’s own driveway) for a long stretches, it was finally handed over to Jason Saris of Performance Marine/Saris Racing Engines in New York. Saris installed a pair of engines and the transmissions, and totally re-rigged the boat; in addition, the boat was water-tested and the motors were dynoed. Now the public can enjoy a piece of history when the Jewsburys exhibit it at poker runs and antique boat shows.

Here’s a beauty of a photo we (and most) have never seen of a young Betty Cook and John Connor.

Taken in the 1975-1978 time range by John Weatherholtz when he saw it being loaded for Benihana Grand Prix off the coast of New Jersey.

Thanks for sharing John! ❤️
