We’re excited to welcome Lisa Brown as the newest Post Grad Resident to the Torpedo Factory Art Center!

Lisa Brown is an artist born and raised in Washington, D.C. Her work explores the intersections of community, memory, and resistance, centering the experiences of Black women whose narratives are often silenced by systemic oppression. She works across sculpture, analog photography, and installation. This balance reflects both the structural violence Black women endure and the resilience, joy, and care that persist as acts of survival.

We are so happy to have had .youngborg for the past few months, taking over the Torpedo Factory Art Center's Post-Grad Residency! They converted Studio 314 into a new space with something interesting to discover in every corner!

Her work uses digital technologies to create video and audio compositions that are combined into immersive installations that explore place, memory, and technology. Tara adapted her art style to fit the post-grad studio, creating translucent maps that use the light from the windows to create location-specific art, cutting out the area of the map that the window overlooked, letting the viewer see the scenery beyond the map.

She also used her time at the Art Center to work on layered cyanotypes that explored community and environment. Layering on geographical shapes or plants found on location over photographs, which encouraged the viewer to spend time deciphering each print and think about their own sense of place and community.

Join us May 28, at 10:30 for a comedic handing-building ceramics workshop creating a home for your computer mouse or other small household item at Torpedo Factory Art Center.

Artist, Clare Suess will then lead participants in learning hand-building ceramic techniques to construct a lidded vessel out of clay, perfectly fitting your object. The workshop will end with painting and decorating your new vessel.

This workshop is free but space is limited please rsvp with the link below to reserve your spot!
