Opening TODAY at Principle Gallery Charleston!

Principle Gallery Charleston is proud to present “Dust and Divine” a unique exhibition by the artists of the Arteva Club Collective. In March of 2026, this international group of artists embarked on a journey of discovery and camaraderie in India. To their surprise, what they saw and experienced surpassed all expectations. Despite Arteva Club being a collective and the fact they all painted together throughout the state of Rajasthan, this collection of paintings, in a variety of media, is a reflection of their individual impressions from that trip.

The opening reception will be held in the gallery TONIGHT September 4th from 5-8 pm with an artist demo the tomorrow morning, September 5th beginning at 10:30 am.

In "Saraa - The Celestial Tide", Marissa Oosterlee imagines Saraa, daughter of Oceanus and Asteria, born from the union of the endless waters and the stars. Gifted with command over the living ocean and the ability to weave starlight, Saraa serves as a bridge between the celestial and earthly worlds.

Surrounded by tiny stars as mist drifts across her face, she embodies the meeting of her two inheritances, the infinite sea below and the boundless heavens above.

"Survivor" by Michael T. Davis is an image marked by endurance. Standing blindfolded before a landscape consumed by fire, the figure appears vulnerable, yet unwavering. There is no visible struggle or attempt to escape. Instead, Davis gives us a moment of stillness amid destruction, allowing the figure’s quiet resolve to carry the weight of the scene.

It is this tension between vulnerability and strength that makes the human figure such a powerful vehicle for storytelling.

See all four of Michael T. Davis' paintings in "Bodies of Work", now on display through September 14th.

Laura E. Pritchett on a new series of work:

"About the new collection:

I’m thinking of calling it, “Can I Keep It?,” inspired by my childhood habit of constantly asking my parents this question when I came across animals of all kinds (including a discarded race horse and many other creatures I tamed in the woods and had no business handling). I’m reframing this experience with a purpose of conveying feminine strength. The young girls in these paintings have a vintage 1940’s/50s aesthetic to bring to mind restrictive societal limitations/expectations while their relationships to powerful animals prove to be fiercely contrary. The title “Can I Keep It?” would no longer be the plea of a girl asking for permission to have an unexpected pet, it’s her self-reflection: Can she keep the fiery, untamed heart of her youth as she grows up and navigates life?

As I was recently trying to explain to a friend how this occurred, I found myself saying how “crazy and reckless” I was as a kid, but part of me missed that girl and I thought, gosh, am I still capable of that kind of fearlessness or have I allowed adulthood, maturity, responsibility, society, etc. to tame more of her than I wish it had? I think this is a universal reflection adults often have to varying degrees and I plan to explore it from my specific point of view and with a variety of symbolic creatures."

This piece is on view now in our current figurative exhibition, "Bodies of Work." Come see the show in person through September 14th!
