March 25, 1911
A fast-spreading fire in the Triangle Shirtwaist Company in New York City killed 145 garment workers, nearly half of whom chose to jump from 8th, 9th, and 10th story windows rather than burn to death. Most of the victims, mainly Jewish and Italian immigrant women in their teens and 20s, were trapped on the top floors of the building because of faulty or missing safety equipment, and doors that were locked to prevent workers from leaving the building during their 12-hour shift. The tragedy put a national spotlight on the dangerous conditions and the rights of workers in the New York garment industry.
