The bride in today's couple is the only one who has a baptism record that we find in a local congregation's books and is included in our German Family Tree. I am going to begin with her in this post despite the fact that she was born about 9 years after her future husband. Esther Emma Elizabeth Rauh was born on June 24, 1908, the daughter of Charles and Louisa (Bergmann) Rauh....

Although we begin today's story in Frohna, Missouri, that is not where most of the story takes place. This is yet another one of those posts in which a person is born in East Perry County, but early on, moves to a different location. Natalie Augusta Blancken was born on August 27, 1899, so she qualifies to be today's birthday girl, celebrating her 125th birthday....

Today's birthday girl is Ida Wilhelmine Louise Mecker, who was born on August 26, 1894. That means today would be her 130th birthday. Ida was the daughter of Henry and Catherine (Bangert) Mecker. She was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Perryville. I have to take a little side trip now. In the course of researching Ida Mecker, Ancestry.com gave a search result the came from the…...

East Perry County lost a pillar in the Lutheran history community this past week. He was a great supporter of Saxon Lutheran Memorial in Frohna. His funeral was held at Concordia Lutheran Church yesterday. He will certainly be missed, but he is now spending eternity with his Lord in heaven.

I am going to attempt to settle this. Our German Family Tree says the following about a pair of girls in the Luedemann family. Luedemann girls info - GFT As you can see, there is a question mark behind the word, twin, for these two girls. There is documentation for the date of birth of Engel Luedemann in her marriage record found in the books of Christ Lutheran Church in Jacob, Illinois....

I have a confession to make. Not long ago, our new museum director decided to do a blog post on Fridays. That decision would give me a regular day off of writing posts. However, yesterday was the third time that I did research on a story for a Friday publication since she made that commitment. I am a creature of habit....

At the center (literally!) of our exhibit "Flowing through Time: Wittenberg, Tower Rock & the Mississippi River," the U.S. Corps of Engineers display on the Great Flood of 1993 rises over the other exhibits much like the floodwaters did that fateful summer. The 1993 flood was one of the most significant and damaging natural disasters ever to hit the United States....

Quite a few previous posts on this blog have told the story of men and women who were lifelong single people. I find it quite interesting that in several of those cases, I have discovered that there was more than one child in a family that remained unmarried for their entire lives and often lived with each other during that time....

A little over 2 years ago, a post was published on this blog titled, P Is for Pancratius. That article told the story of man who had the unusual name of Pancratius. In that post, I referred to the main character as P. John Muench...the "P" standing for Pancratius. P. John and his wife, Caroline Ochs, had 4 children, and only one of them was a boy....

By now, you may realize that I find it hard to ignore a person's 200th (or bicentennial) birthday. On several occasions in the past, this leads me to share an old post that has already been written about the person celebrating such a birthday. That will be the case today, and I must admit that I enjoy finding such a case because it more or less gives me a day off of doing the research necessary to write a brand new story....
