Friedrich Grosse – Collinsville Shoemaker

You will read the story of a man and a woman who each came to America as part of the Stephanite immigration in 1839. The man was 22 years old, and the woman was 17. These two got married not long after their arrival in this country. One might think that they became acquainted while making the voyage to America. However, these two made that trip aboard two separate ships....

Emil Pfeifer – Tecumseh, Nebraska Blacksmith

Today's birthday girl was born in Ohio. She would eventually spend most of her life in Nebraska. However, in between, she would spend 15 years of her early childhood and teenage years in Perry County. You will be reading her story today. Mathilde Emilie Bergt was born on May 30, 1859, so today would be her 167th birthday. Emilie was the daughter of Adolph William and Gottlieben Frederica (Rauss) Bergt....

Museum Musings for Friday, May 29

Today’s Musings will be short but (bitter)sweet. I will start by making another plea for help. While there are still two more weeks left for The Joy of Red & White quilt exhibit (if you haven't heard, we're extending it so that it will still be up for any ladies traveling to the Lutheran Women's Missionary League Convention in Cape Girardeau who want to swing by and see it), we are already gearing up for what’s coming next....

Adolph Harnisch – An Original Stephanite

The surname, Harnisch, has never appeared on this blog before. And that surname never made it into Perry County. However, it is included in our German Family Tree, and it is one of the names that is listed in bold face type. When Lynn Degenhardt put together the GFT, he chose to make the original German Lutheran immigrants noticeable by listing them in bold face type....

Rudolph Starzinger – St. Louis Tool & Die Guy

Rudolph Franz Starzinger is today's birthday boy, having been born on May 27, 1891. That makes today his 135th birthday. Rudolph and his future wife are both found in our German Family Tree, but they are not connected as bride and groom because they did not get married in a local church and spent most of their lives in St. Louis....

When Salem Comes Marching Home Again

Fred Eggers is our local expert on the historic happenings at Salem Lutheran Church in Farrar. He is still an active member at that congregation. Fred is also one of our local experts on military history. Fred will give evidence of both of those traits as we once again share a blog post that Fred has written. Thanks go out to Fred as he gives me a day off for some re-energizing after a Memorial Day weekend visit with our family in Illinois....

Arno, Walter, and Norman – KIA in WWI

On this Memorial Day of 2026, I decided to share the stories of 3 young men who are found in our German Family Tree that were each killed in action (KIA) during World War I. First of all, the post that I attached below tells the tale of a man who was even born in Germany before being sent overseas to fight against his country of birth....

Missouri Man Marries Nebraska Woman in Oregon

I am sharing another old story today. On other occasions when I have republished an old story, I add some more documents that I located. That will not be the case today. I think I pretty much exhausted all the documents for the story of Paul Eggers when I first wrote this post on this day in 2023. About all I can say to add is that if I was to write a similar title for my personal story, it would be Missouri Man Marries Minnesota Woman in Tennessee.
