The Alton Historical Society is pleased to announce that it will host well known New England historian Matthew E. Thomas of Fremont, N.H. on Tuesday, July 15th at 7:00p.m. at the Gilman Library, 100 Main Street, Alton, NH. The presentation will be held in the lower level meeting room. Mr. Thomas will present an exciting illustrated slide lecture presentation titled “THE NEW ENGLAND IMAGE” which will feature a variety of famous and little-known iconic landmarks that dot the historic New England countryside dating back over two to three centuries. Mr. Thomas will give a fascinating and informative lecture on the many iconic New England landmarks that make this region of the United Sates such as majestic old meeting houses, town pounds, taverns & inns, tramp houses, powder houses, ancient milestones, old jails, hearse houses, one-room schoolhouses, revolutionary-war-era forts, garrison houses, lighthouses, grist mills and old gravestones. If you truly LOVE New England, then this is a talk you won’t want to miss!
Mr. Thomas is well known throughout the northeast as a historical researcher, author, writer, lecturer, preservationist and promoter of early New England history. He attended architectural, archaeological, and early American history courses at the College of William & Mary, published 16 books, and is a member of the New Hampshire Historical Society, the President Franklin Pierce Brigade, a member of the Association of N.H. Historical Societies, and a founding member of the New Hampshire Civil War Roundtable. He founded New England Historical Research Associates in 1978 which he operated for over 30 years. Mr. Thomas has lectured throughout the northeast for over 50 years on a wide variety of historical topics. He will have copies of his books on New England Powder Houses and New Hampshire Town Pounds available for sale – both which are the most comprehensive books ever compiled on these two topics.
