(1340)

The American Quarter Horse Foundation connects horses and people through charitable giving to support programs that preserve our horseโ€™s legacy and further the well-being of the American Quarter Horse and the Quarter Horse family. Since 1960, more than $13 million has been awarded to various colleges and Universities to further our understanding of equine management and health and improve the over

all welfare of our horse. Since its inception in 1976, the Foundation scholarship program has awarded more than $10 million in financial assistance to more than 1,600 young horse enthusiasts and industry members. The American Quarter Horse is renowned for its capacity to offer transformative experiences to those in need, making it a cornerstone of the Equine Assisted Services (EAS) industry. With high performance standards set, the Americaโ€™s Horse Cares grant program is dedicated to enhancing industry horsemanship skills while prioritizing the welfare of our horse. The American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum, located in Amarillo, Texas, houses the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame and celebrates and preserves the history of the worldโ€™s most versatile breed.

Walter and Nancy Hughes were ambassadors for AQHA and the most versatile horse on earth. A horseman known internationally as an owner, breeder, trainer, exhibitor and judge, Walter and wife Nancy exemplified service in the worldwide development of the American Quarter Horse.

Walter, who died in 2012, was a trainer for 42 years, with special interests in cutting, reining and western pleasure. During his 36 years carrying an AQHA judgeโ€™s card, he judged Quarter Horse shows in 12 countries, including Germany, where the Deutsch Quarter Horse Association awarded โ€œOnkle Walterโ€ an honorary life membership for his help in developing a quality western riding program in that country.

On this side of the pond, Walter officiated shows across the United States and most provinces in Canada, including the AQHA World Championship Show, American Quarter Horse Youth World Cup and All American Quarter Horse Congress. Walter also had judgeโ€™s cards with the National Reining Horse, National Cutting Horse and the National Snaffle Bit associations. A co-founder of NSBA, Walter was chairman of that organizationโ€™s judges committee and was inducted into the NSBA Hall of Fame in 1989. He was the first horseman from the western discipline to be inducted into the Maryland Horse Councilโ€™s Horsemanโ€™s Hall of Fame. The East Coast Cutting Horse Association gave him the Ford Spalding Memorial Sportsmanship Award.

Walter served as an AQHA director from 1971 until 1995, serving on the youth, membership, judges and Hall of Fame committees, and served as chairman of the judges committee. Nancy served on the Foundation Committee and Council for many years. The couple traveled the world together, and both earned Lifetime Achievement Awards from the AQHA Professional Horsemenโ€™s Council.

Born in Philadelphia, Nancy Strohsacker was introduced to the Quarter Horse world by her first husband, Bill Patton, with whom she had children Will and Cindy. The Pattons acquired the Skipper W filly Skipโ€™s Dilly, who became an AQHA Champion and the 1966 high-point western pleasure mare.

In 1968, Nancy and the kids moved to Damascus, Maryland, where she married Walter in 1969. That same year, the new couple purchased land that became Maryland Meadows Farm. Nancy spent her days as a sixth-grade teacher, her evenings assisting Walter with boarding and breeding Quarter Horses, and her weekends on the road with him showing their next champion. They purchased, trained and showed to Superiors in halter and western pleasure the Otoe stallion Brio, who went on to sire AQHA Champion Bo Brillo. They also owned and trained Brazos Brio, the 1977 world champion junior working hunter; and Docs Boots, who became an NCHA money earner.

Horses took Walter and Nancy a long way. Ardent advocates of bringing along youth and the next generation of horse people, Walter and Nancy spent immeasurable time helping local 4-H and FFA groups learn more about horses. Nancy, who died in 2017, especially advocated for therapeutic riding programs. They did the same for new Quarter Horse enthusiasts around the world, often through clinics after judging international shows.

Walter and Nancy Hughes, ambassadors, take residence in the embassy known as the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame with induction in 2022.

Miss Meyers was one of 35 foals registered from Leoโ€™s 1949 crop, and was the second of seven foals from her dam, the Oklahoma Star mare Starโ€™s Lou. Bred by O. C. โ€œBlondyโ€ Meyer, the sorrel mare was foaled at his Konowa, Oklahoma, ranch.

Her official race record began as a 4-year-old, and during the following five years she made 59 starts. Miss Meyers placed first 17 times, second 15 times and third five times, and earned $28,727. In her first official start, she was defeated by champion Leolita, but her next start proved her to be a winner. Miss Meyers won races in Oklahoma, Colorado and New Mexico.

In 1953, she went to Los Alamitos in California to compete, and three days after winning the California Championship, Miss Meyers was purchased for $6,000 by A. B. Green of Purcell, Oklahoma. She won nine of her 17 starts that year, set four track records at four different tracks, was the highest money-earning horse, and was named world champion and champion mare.

Two years after her championship season, the seven-time stakes winner retired and became a broodmare. She produced four foals during her broodmare career. Her first foal was Oh My Oh, a 1957 daughter of Spotted Bull (TB). Oh My Oh produced 1968 All American Futurity winner Three Ohโ€™s. Miss Meyersโ€™ second foal was champion Mr Meyers, a son of Go Man Go who won the Kansas Futurity and earned $25,619 over three years on the track. Mr Meyers later sired winners of more than $1.2 million.

Her last foal, a sorrel son of Three Bars (TB), was born a month before Miss Meyers died of colic in 1963. Greenโ€™s wife raised the foal, later named Kid Meyers, on a bottle in their backyard. The orphaned foal went on to become the first AQHA Supreme Champion and sired Mr Kid Charge, who won the 1971 All American Futurity.

Miss Meyers was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2009.

Do you know ๐‚๐จ๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐š ๐‚๐š๐ซ๐ญ๐ž๐ฅ?

Corona Cartel had looks, brains, ability โ€“ the true essence of an American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame stallion. Bred by Robert D. โ€œBobโ€ Etchandy of Anaheim, California, Corona Cartel was from the first foal crop sired by Holland Ease, a son of Hall of Famer and all-time leading sire First Down Dash. Foaled in 1994, Corona Cartel was the first foal out of American Quarter Horse Hall of Famer Corona Chick, the track-record-setting champion racehorse famous for her speed and temperament.

Corona Cartel was purchased as a yearling at the 1995 Vessels/Schvaneveldt Sale for $42,000 by Celina Molina of Tucson, Arizona. Corona Cartel scored in six of 14 career starts, including three elite races, and then won the All American Futurity Consolation in a time faster than the winner of the All American Futurity that year.

When Corona Cartel walked in the saddling paddock, he looked like a Quarter Horse, a compact, refined and well-balanced package โ€œlike a little Jet Deckโ€“really a nice horse, lots of class,โ€ said trainer Jaime Gomez. When he got in the starting gate, Corona Cartel stood ready, ears pricked, focused down the track. And when the gate opened, Corona Cartel ran like a major winner among the fastest horses on earth. Corona Cartel retired from the track with earnings of $557,142.

Syndicated in 2001 and standing his entire career at Lazy E Ranch at Guthrie, Oklahoma, the stallion through February 2022 had sired 2,061 foals from 23 crops. Now the second-all-time leading race sire (behind only First Down Dash), Corona Cartel has sired 1,138 winners and the earners of more than $66 million from 1,664 starters. His get include nine champions, including world champion and second all-time leading money-earning mare Blues Girl Too and champion and All American Futurity winner Teller Cartel; and leading sires PYC Paint Your Wagon, whose sons include leading sire Freighttrain B, and Ivory James; and leading dams Remember Me Rose and Ms First Prize Rose. Corona Cartel alsoโ€“so farโ€“is the broodmare sire of six champions, including world champion Bodacious Eagle.

Corona Cartel has also sired horses that have won AQHA points in halter and performance and made their names in the National Reining Horse Association, National Reined Cow Horse Association, Barrel Futurities of America and other competitions. Among those are AQHA Supreme Champion Cartel Caliente and Wrangler National Finals Rodeo barrel horse Rosas Cantina CC.

Corona Cartel was euthanized December 18, 2019, and inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2022.

A horseโ€™s first line of defense against respiratory disease starts in the nose, right where viruses enter the body.
Thanks to AQHF-funded research, weโ€™re learning more about how horses fight back against Equine Herpevirus-1 (EHV-1), a serious virus that can cause neurologic disease and abortion in mares.

- Researchers developed safe, low-stress ways to study immune cells directly from the nasal passages
- For the first time, they mapped key T cells in the respiratory tract
- These cells respond differently in the nose than in the bloodstream, helping explain how horses stop infection early

What this means for AQHA members: better insight into how horses naturally defend against disease, and progress toward more effective vaccines and diagnostics to protect your horses.
For more information about this study visit AQHFโ€™s equine research database at aqha.com/current-research.

As the story goes, Two Eyed Jack was born while his breeder was enmeshed in a poker game. After going to check his mare and finding the new foal, horseman Herman Mass returned to the poker table to find a two-eyed jack in his hand. ๐Ÿค

Although Herman gave the stallion his memorable name, it was Nebraska horseman Howard Pitzer who gave him his legacy. Howard purchased him โ€“ in pieces, he says, because the horse cost so much โ€“ and knew he had a winner. โ€œJackโ€ earned his open AQHA Champion title in 1964. Aside from his own success in the show pen, the stallion earned even more respect in the breeding barn. He sired the first AQHA Superhorse, Vickie Lee Pine, in 1978, and he has sired 119 open AQHA Champions, making him by far the leading sire in that category still today.
Both Howard and his famous stallion were inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 1996.
