Meet Isabelle, one of our Student Museum Educators, or SMEs. Isabelle is the latest feature from our Meet the ‘Me’ in ‘Mead’ series.

While sitting in one of the lounges in the “Kwame Brathwaite: Revolutionary Movements” exhibition (on view now!), Isabelle speaks about why being a SME has been a highlight of her experience at Amherst.

Congratulations to recent Amherst College graduate Rachel De La Cruz, who was awarded the annual Wise Prize for Studio Art, which is judged by Mead curatorial staff. Rachel’s work, “Untitled,” was selected for its conceptual and technical cohesion, as well as for the successful integration of paper casting, drawing, and collage.

Rachel’s artist statement:
I was barely a year old when my parents and I immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic in 2003. I have no memory of life on the island.

Although I have returned to the Dominican Republic several times throughout my life, my understanding of the culture has largely come from interactions with my parents and family.

The language, mythology, and traditions that I inherited from my parents are frozen at the moment of our departure. Culture can change over time, but my parents have handed me a fossil. Sediments of our collective family history that have gradually solidified into rock form. I have created a visual representation of this fossil, engaging with my culture as a paleontologist might—excavating, preserving, and interpreting.

Another day, another Mead community member to spotlight! Actually, make that community memberS, since today we’re taking you to the William Green Study Room of the museum, where a class is taking place.

You will meet Joshua Guilford who teaches a class titled “Ecomedia,” about the relationship between media forms and the environment, and some of the students participating in his class.

Welcome back to our Meet the ‘Me’ in ‘Mead’ series!

Today, we’re traveling through the galleries of the museum, where Fran, one of our Student Museum Educators (SMEs), is carrying out a “Deep Dive” – a 1-hour-long interactive lesson about a work of art currently on view.

Take a moment to listen to what Fran has to say about the way his experience as a SME helped him shape his future career.

We were so thrilled to participate in Mass Kids Lit Fest again this year with our buds at Jones Library and Rachel C. Katz, author of “Rise Up!: Powerful Protests in American History” (illustrated by Sophie Bass).

Rachel led assembled kids and families through dreaming up and crafting signs for issues they’re passionate about. Thank you, Rachel, and a big thanks to everyone at Mass Kids Lit Fest and the Mass Center for the Book ( ). Today is the last day of the festival, so families — there’s still time to get out there and read together!

Yesterday’s Met Gala was centered around the theme of “Costume Art,” and celebrities showed up in outfits that highlighted the connection between fashion, the human body, and art.

A few of those outfits reminded us of our own collection here at the Mead... how many Mead-inspired (😉) outfits can YOU see?

✨This is your sign to come check out the Black Art Matters exhibition while you still can!✨

You have until THIS SUNDAY, May to spend some quality time with the works of this year’s talented cohort of student artists.

The Black Art Matters Festival, now wrapping up its ninth edition, affirms and celebrates student artists and creators. Zoe Akoto (Class of 2021) started the Black Art Matters Festival in 2018 in a student dormitory when she noticed that the creative work of Black students was rarely seen on campus. Since then, BAM has become a yearly tradition at the college and the Mead.
