Andrew Shepherd reminds us to break out of comfort zones in his digital illustration, "Bubble." He reflects on our times after the Covid pandemic: "Becoming so incredibly isolated from one another, in this case out of necessity, showed how truly lonely it can be to live in the information age. Realizing how claustrophobic these bubbles can be and choosing to expand beyond what we are comfortable with; we can see how much greener the grass can be on the other side." We can come together in these times to help each other.

Today's preview is of an untitled acrylic painting by Lillian Mitchell. In this image, Lillian reflects on her own heritage. She describes the inspiration behind her imagery: "[the assignment prompt] made me think of all my family members, recalling all the memories and the stories I had been told about my ancestry. One of those stories my mom would tell me was about our Viking ancestors and how our family’s symbol was a double tailed mermaid, like depicted in my painting."

Today's preview is of Grace Britton's graphite drawing, "Mother & Daughter," which brings awareness to the ties of feminism and mental health. She describes: "This piece comes from a photo taken of my mother around the time I was born in the late 90’s. Maternal love and relationships have been something I have been pondering since I turned 22, the same age my mother was when she gave birth to me." Grace reminds us to cherish our family and to create a future our children would be proud of.

Here is an exhibit preview coming from Eila Alatervo! Her medium of choice is acrylic paint, though she also enjoys painting with oil paint and drawing with charcoal. She took art classes through high school and is currently attending the University of Alaska Anchorage for her Bachelor of Art with an emphasis in painting.

About this artwork, Eila says: "Families that had once drifted apart may reunite, even if just briefly, as they mourn the loss of the ones they have lost. The despair and anger that people hold right now is something that binds them together."

Our next preview for our upcoming exhibit comes from Gloria Alsworth! Gloria has been creating ceramic arts since 2014 when she discovered ceramics was her passion. Although ceramics is her preferred medium, Gloria is also a painter, sculpture and collector of trash and sea glass.

Gloria's statement regarding this piece: " I spend my time collecting plastic marine debris and other trash from the coasts of Alaska to use in multi-media paintings and sculptures. By incorporating debris in my work, I try to raise awareness of the extent of plastic pollution in our oceans, waterways, and precious land.

We are starting off this week with a sneak peak from Jeremie Mendez! Jeremie was born and raised in South Central Los Angeles, CA in a time where poverty was at a rise. Many years later, Jeremie then graduated with an Associates degree in Art, but felt a calling to the state of Alaska; where he would continue his growth as an Artist. After living six more years in Alaska, he’s well on his way to embark on a newly discovered realm: teaching.

Jermie has this to say regarding this artwork: "My rough childhood is what continues to motivate the way I see and apply my skillsets to Art. I know that with the good, the bad, and the ugly- there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. While I lived in chaos and dwelled in the darkness, hidden while out of sight was I able to embrace the unknown."

Mary Claire describes when she made this piece, ”My sister, niece, and I took a day trip to Cannon Beach in Oregon. It was the jump start of the summer of 2020 and the beginning of a goodbye. I didn’t think I’d look back on this painting with joy and gratitude. We had to get away from Seattle and be around beauty and fresh air. Some of my most important and lovely moments with my Mom have been at the beach playing and exploring the beach until sunset.”

Mary Claire Letourneau mentions the art process, “I’m glad I painted this day instead of a photo or a writing because what I felt at that time might not otherwise be represented in different mediums.”

This peice resonates with the Rene Migritte painting “The Lover”. Although the concept was known to be about the failure to unveil the truth of ones most intimate partner, Rebekah describes the parallel of her rendition of this symbolism with the pandemic bringing equal isolation. She mentions, “This painting was recreated to demonstrate there are barriers that may prevent intimacy through masks to signify the pandemic that the world is going through.”

Rebekah Smith is an Alaska Native artist. She was born in Anchorage, Alaska, but raised in Wasilla, Alaska, which she is currently residing. Her artistic inspirations come from a creative mindset. She always views and enjoys art that surrounds her.

In this piece Claire reflects on making art to connect when there is distance with loved ones. “This was my way of connecting even though we live in the different places, and I can’t always see her grow and change. I hope it brings a feeling of connection to her in the future also, that even though we are miles apart, she knows how much I care about her.“ She continues, “I love capturing the soul of my subject in my artwork. This specific piece is especially personal to me because the subject is my niece, Ellery.

Claire Roundtree draws her inspiration from the world around her and the vast beauty that life in Alaska has to offer. “The mountains, the colors, the way the light hits the snow-covered trees, there are unlimited ways to be inspired in Alaska as an artist”. She was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, and she moved to Anchorage, Alaska when she was nine and has been living and working there ever since.
