Stop by on Wednesday, June 10th between 5-9pm for a community organized book swap at Akela Space. Bring any books that you are ready to part with (or just bring yourself!) and find some new books to take home with you. We’ll have some cozy areas for reading through your new finds and there will be drinks available for purchase from Starlight Coffee. Thanks to Goth for being the brain behind this event!

Join us on Friday, June 5th 6-8pm for the opening of Outside the Spectrum: Alaska Satellite Art, an exhibition by Nara McCray.

The exhibition presents a series of works derived entirely from satellite reflectance data captured over Alaska. Satellites capture more of the light spectrum than conventional cameras; the art in this exhibit uses wavelengths of light, some of which exist beyond detection of the human eye, to reveal a new kind of beauty.

By manipulating satellite data both visually—such as shifting a river from blue to pink—and analytically, through mathematical indices that emphasize features like vegetation, the work reimagines familiar landscapes as information-art. These images are not maps, and they are not meant to guide or situate the viewer. They invite viewers to appreciate the landscape without the constraints of human-defined geography.

Ultimately, the exhibition reframes technical tools as artistic media, created not by a traditional artist, but by a geospatial scientist whose presence in the field is itself an exception.

Nara McCray is a GIS and remote sensing scientist, born and raised in Alaska and currently based in Spain. Her professional work focuses on the use of spatial data to support humanitarian response, while her creative pursuit explores the use of satellite imagery as an artistic medium.

**Edit: this event is full! We hope to host again in the future, so stay tuned!**

Are you looking to make new friends this summer? We’re hosting a friend mixer - a free event to meet new people and make connections! The event will include both structured activities and unstructured social time. This is an event for adults!

RSVP is required for this event! We will be limiting this first event to a manageable group size and may expand event size in the future.

We ask that you please be mindful of your own capacity! This event is best for folks who have both time and energy to give to new relationships :)

At the conclusion of the event, each participant will get a chance to anonymously indicate who they would like to continue to connect with after the event - they can indicate as many or as few people as they would like. If two people indicate each other, the event host will share each person’s phone number with the other after the event. If only one person indicates interest but not the other, the phone number will not be shared (analog Tinder for friends!). This is to help protect each participant’s privacy and to avoid participants feeling pressured to give their phone number to more people than they are comfortable with. If you have questions or concerns, please email [email protected].

This May, Akela Space will feature Homesick, an exhibition by Margaret Burke. The show comprises a collection of abstract watercolor pieces that explore themes of place, home, and memory.

As Margaret navigates the pangs of homesickness, she paints what reminds her of home, reminiscing on the patterns, colors, shapes, and moments that made up the places she’s lived. Margaret hopes her pieces evoke a memory, a place, or even a vision into the future for the viewer. Her work is an invitation to reflect on what ‘home’ looks and feels like.

Homesick opens Friday, May 1st. Visit the gallery 6-9pm to view the show and chat with Margaret.

Margaret Burke practices art and writing in Anchorage, Alaska. She takes inspiration from the environment and the everyday mundane into painting, photography, and writing. Originally from Kansas, Margaret holds a M.L.S in Library Science from Emporia State and a B.F.A in Studio Art from Fort Hays State.
